The more clearly it ap pears that the party, this year, lacks the courage that (toes with settled con viction. And the reason is as plain as the fact which it explains. The re publican party ,ln this year of crisis and responsibility, is a party without convictions on which It can airree and which It dare formulate and proclaim. It has become a party thoroughly non principled if not unprincipled, wholly opportunistic. It "plays the came" of politics on the outcome of which na tional and world destiny depend as the demagogue plays It. Do you want to know where the re. publican party stands on such grave issues as are involved In "prepared' ness" and universal training: Indus trial relations; taxation; banking and currency; the high cost of living; "profiteering;" the Indiscriminate bonus to service men? It Indulges generalisations so broad they mean all things to all men which Is what they were deliberately designed to mean. In essence and truth they mean noth Ing. And the reason Is that on these antl other Issues the republican party can not Itself agree. In part It Is lost in a fog of indecision, lack of vision, timidity. And in part It is hopelessly divided, as was proved when a repub lican congress attempted to deal with these Issues. It did not know what to do; It could not agree on what to do and so It did nothing hut damn the democrats. It Is more hopelessly Htantlpat today than ever before In its history. It has become the party an absurd sort of obscurantism that while it resists and opposes progress clamors to high heaven because con ditions are as bad as they are. It 1 like a man who sobs because he Is in a mire and bellows in indignation at the suggestion that he wade out be cause he can't make up his mind in which direction to go to get out, and who can't make up his mind because he is congenltnlly opposed to moving In any direction. "Chaos with cold feet." It is a happy phrase. On the league of nations the repub lican party takes an explicit stand. It is against the league and against the covenant, with or without reserva tions. It applauds all the republican senators who participated In the as sassination, whether they fought bold ly in the open as brave foes, or with blow guns and poisoned darts as skulkers in the underbrush, or as art thou-in-health-my-brother "friends." But when. In its platform, the re publican party attempts to give rea sons for its opposition, it takes on an aspect grotesque and pitiable. Its reasons are without logic, without truth, without sincerity, without cour age. They read very like a. page torn out of the story of the adventures of Alice In Wonderland. " . Think of a party that opposes league to preserve peace to which 4 0 other nations have agreed declaring solemnly: "The republican party Beauty More Than Skin Deep There la an old saying that beauty la only skin deep. That may be so with those who get their beauty out of a box but not the genuine sort. Beau ty is really only another word for good health and no woman who is bilious and constipated can reasonably hope to be beautiful. Think of a party which alienated for the United States the confidence, respect and friendship of the world by keeplig this country out of the league which itself had proposed and de manded, saying this: "After a period of unexampled sacrifice our motives are Buspected, our moral influence im paired and our government stands dis credited and friendless among the a tio of the world!" A party holding up the shameful fruit of its own perfidy as a reason why it should not be re warded and trusted! - a Think of a party declnrlng that the league covenant "ignored the univer sal sentiments of America for genera tions past In favor of international law and arbitration" In the face of Artiile Fourteen of the covenant, which provides: 'The council shall formulate and submit to the members of the league for their adoption plans for the estab lishment of a permanent court of In ternational justice. The court shall be competent to hear and determine any dispute of an international character to which the parties thereto submit it. The court may also give an advisory opinion upon any dispute or question referred to it by the council or by the assembly." Wonder, too, that the republican platform declaration Is made in the face of the further fact that Klihu Root, as the Invited guest of the Brit ish and French governments, has sail ed for London to help formulate plans for "a permanent court of internation al justice" as provided under Article Fourteen! Think of a party taking the stand this platform takes adopting a reso lution deploring the death of Theo dore Roosevelt as an "Irreparable loss." when . it was Roosevelt who wrote, while the war was In progress: ."Merely to bring about a peace the present moment without providing for the elimination of the causes of war would accomplish nothing of per- j manent Talue. The one permanent move for obtaining peace which ha yet been suggested with any reason able chance of obtaining Its object is I by an agreement among the great powers. In which each should pledge I Uft-U not only to abide by the dec. stone of a common tribunal, but to back with force the decisions of that common tribunal. The great civilised nations of the world which do possess force, actual or immediately potential, should combine by solemn agreement In a great wrld league for the peace of righteousness, I earnestly hope that we shall become one of the joint guarantors of world peace umur such a plan. The league should lay down I the rule that the territorial integrity of each nation maa inviolate: that It I was to be guaranteed absolutely Its sovereign rights." That is the great and noble plan for the peace of righteousness that Roose- veilt preached. It is the plan that Taft preached. It Is the plan Woodrow Wilson proclaimed and that thia re public adopted as its own when It en tered the war. It Is the plan against which no republican voice was lifted in opposition until the war was won. It is the plan that was embodied In the terms of the armistice which Ger many accepted. It is the plnn that was written into the treaty of peace ac I ccpted and ratified by every other bel ligerent but ourselves and by more I than a score of neutral nations. And it Is the plan against which the repub lican party the party that deplores the death of Roosevelt as dn Irrepar able loss today sets Its face and its I heart like flint. . f Because now we alone, thanks to I the shortcomings of republican states- I manship, have refused to accept that! plan and use it for the ealvatlon of civ ilization from destruction by war, we truly, as the republican platform says, j "stand friendless and discredited am- j ong the nations of the world."
