PRESIDENTIAL TIMBER aaam ESPITE effort of the treaty, prohibition and high prices 4fcJ to concentrate attention of the nation, the coming presi dential race cannot be laid aside in the interests of the people. The electorate of the United States is already consider ing likely men as tenants for the White House beginning March 4, 1921. The first struggle for votes has been fought in the republi can ranks and Leonard Wood and Frank Lowden drew, with two each. Sentiment in the east at this time ranks the army man as favorite for the nomination in his party with the governor of Illinois, second. On the democratic wing, three names on the lips of every citizen throughout the war hold prominence. Foremost among these now is that of Herbert Hoover, food administrator. Hoover, it is true, is being claimed by each of the old parties and has not declared himself. His greatest admirers characterize him as a man so well qualified as to place party affiliation subordinate. A. Mitchell Palmer who became attorney general after at taining prominence as alien property custodian, has a following in the east, yet in this section he is little known. His chances of support from labor are not considered good because of the use of the injunction against strikers since he became attorney general. The status of President Wilson's son-in-law, William G. Mc Adoo, remains the mystery of the pre-campaigners. McAdoo is sitting tight, perhaps to make his entry in the race at the eleventh hour. As a businessman and as a cabinet member he is today one of the best-known of national figures. Besides these five, considered leaders in the nomination race, there are Senators Pomerene, Poindexter, Johnson, Gover nor Cox. of Ohio. Bryan and numerous others to have their say. The counry is not to lack for quantity in presidential timber; therefore an early start is advisable in finding qualifications. That there should baffle been no failures or panics or depression in a period when j the country was turning from the business of war to the pursuits i of peace ; when the immense debts incurred in the conflict with Germany were at their maximum : -vien four millions of men j were replaced in the industries from which they were drawn to I fill the army and navy .is without parallel, but that this very time was one of prosperity and soundness beyond comparison is no less than marvellous. , The figures are the most startling testimony at once of the Federal Reserve System's incalculable value and of the nation's wonderful position. Gross earnings of the banking institutions, the comptroller of the currency reports, were SI, 000, 000, 000 in 1919. In the same twelve months their net profits were approxi mately $300,000000., These figures testify not only to the healthfulness of business and industry in the past year. They are an earmark of the prosperity of the year to come. Who of all the critics of the Federal Reserve System when it was in process of creation would propose its disestablishment now in the face of the facts? Motion pictures will play a new part in the education of the ; American public when films showing the original constitution ox the United States and the Declaration of Independence will j be exhibited. Photographs of the historic documents were re-! cently made by the cinema camera and will be shown through-1 out the land as an antidote for ultra-radicalism. "War gardens" did their part during 1918 and 1919; the department of agriculture is advising "war-price gardens" for 1920. Prices will still be high and that vacant lot can be made to produce table vegetables. Get an early start too,, the de partment advises. Americans are eating 8 per cent less meat than they did 20 years ago and the government is wondering whether costs or changing tastes are responsible. Probably tastes have changed, due to costs.
