Wells. t IT WOULD DEMORALIZE SCHOOL WORK or 'HERE is public approval of the idea that the teaching pro fession should be better paid and there will always be ap proval of the contention that teachers be treated with fair ness and justice. While teachers, in convention or out, work to accomplish these ends they will find support because they are on firm ground. When, however, they are urged to demand soviet methods of conducting school affairs let them beware because l!u y should not and will not obtain anything of that sort. News reports from the Portland convention just closed show that the teachers assembled were given some absurd advice .-dong this line. The following from the Oregonian's story of the session illustrates the point in question : The main topic for discussion, that or a plan to organize an elective coun cil of tcacliers to act as an advisory board with whom tile school hoard, would have to cnns-ilt as to appointment, promotion and discharge of teachers. An elective council, such as suggested, with which a school board would have to consult regarding appointments, promo tions and discharges of teacher's, would be a radical departure indeed, if as assumed, the council would have the power to veto any action by the board. It would be the "Plumb plan" applied to school affairs. It would mean that the employe assumes the duties of the employer as well as of the employe. It wont work and Russia provides the proof. Soft headed men like Mr. Torrey overlook the public inter est in such affairs as these. The public pays for school work and is entitled to direct the management of affairs. This is done through a school board, the members of which are elected by the people through their ballots. If a school board does not give good service the remedy is to get another board not to take power out of the hands of the board and place it in an elec tive council of teachers. The public will never stand for the Torrey theory because the people want results and the best results could never be ob tained under his scheme. Good school work requires direction and .discipline. Wherever people have voted on the peace treaty they have shown themselves overwhelmingly for ratifying the treaty as it stende. They are strongly opposed to the Lodge resolutions. Thus the canteen was made as inviting as pos sible, tho at best it was just a shack. Here we are in a slight salient north of Kemmel Hill, so the front line is both south and north of us. The shells are coming mostly from the south right over or off Kemmel hill. More than a dozen observation balloons are up while planes are manouverinr above them. Some of the balloons and planes are being fired at by the Hun guns and as the bombs burst great black spots show that they have missed their mark. So many bombs are being put into l:he city of Poperinghe and right over our heads that the boys have begun to call them "the Poperinghe" Kx press." Others are dropping short of us along a heavily camouflaged road back of which there is a large battery or Hritish naval guns. These are be ing apparently shunted hack and forth along a small railroad.
