HEN Fendleton obtains its new theater and the old Oregon playhouse is converted into apartments there will be a two-fold gajn for the city. The necessity of the new tehater has long been obvious apd the demand for liv ing places in the city is even more pressing. We need more work of this sort than is pro posed. With all the improve ments that can be carried out this winter there will still be a house shortage confronting Pendleton. We are not build ing as fast as the growth of the city calls for. New families are arriving regularly and ev ery local wedding1 means a de mand for another house or an apartment. The construction of the Collins mill and the en largement of the woolen mill force will emphasize the need of greater housing accommo dations. Sheriff Returns from Tonchet. Sheriff T. X). Taylor and son. The shoe is now on the other fellow's foot. The president outlined various con structive domestic measures which he submitted to congress for action. Action thereon is required in order to speed the return to normal conditions. Congress, however, has devoted its time to an effort at making political capital over the treaty and is planning to adjourn without working out any recon struction program. The execu tive branch of the government has been willing to take a chance at constructive work re gardless of how the political chips may fall. The legislators with an eye on 1920 have been fearful of doing anything and are letting matters ride as they are despite the fact that harm is sure to result from their ne glect. There is need of more states manship and less politics at Washington.
