An earthquake and 'tidal wave swept Pangal, a town of the Tonga group. n the Pacific Just -south of the equa tor, on April 30, devastating the isl and and bringing its 250 Inhabitants and (0 traders near starvation, ac cording to reports broiignt here this week by Captain Jacob Olson of the schooner Ottllie Fjord. The town was destroyed and the residence of the governor embanked In seven feet of sand when the tidal wave receded.' Captain Olson's report clears up the mystery o( a ' severe earthquake re corded on the seismograph at Lick J observatory, Mount Hamilton. 13:51 continuing 45 minutes. Professor William Wallace Campbell of Lick observatory at the time reported the quake of severe intensity and possi bly within 400 miles of Mount Ham ilton. When the Ottllie Fjord left the Tonga group th, homeless Inhabitant were on precariouly . short rations. awaiting a relief ship. The island is 60 feet httrh, and according to Cap tain Olson the people were saved by their rushing to the topmost point. The schooner had Just unloaded 800, 000 feet of lumber when the quake oc curred, and the tidal wave swept It away. The Tonga group Is 3000 miles from here. Belgian Steel Firms To Merge and Rebuild .
