For the lumber camp scenes in
"Broadway. Bill," Mr. Ixckwood and
his company went to Maine and es
tablished a camp on, the Itaneeley
I -a kef. They arrived In the niid.st of
a cold spell which did not diminish In
Intensity materially at any time dur
ing their three weeks stay. On the
mildest day the thermometer regis
tered ten below and on the coldest
day It dropped to forty-et"ht below.
Despite this bitter cold the ccmpany
worked out of doors practically every
day. Many pictures with luurli-cr
camp locale have been made In the
pHtt. but It Is doubtful If any was
staged under like circumstances; nor
is It likely that such f pre nd id .re
sults were ever obtained, as those
who see "Broadway Bill will doubt
less be willing to grttnt.

wary, and the wise will keep a sharp
lookout for them- Warren Iexter,
in this brilliant five-act screen ro
mance realizes the fact perfectly,
and decides to be on his guard. But
fate In the guise of a pretty lrl
outwits him and he steps right Into
the very pit he was trying: to avoid.
"Social Oulcksands" in one of those
charming combinations of humor and
adventure in which Francis X. Bush
manand Beverly Bayne excel. Mr.
I Bushman Is seen as a wealthy man
who does not care for society, and
Miss Bayne plays Phi His Lane, a real
social "butterfly." He refuses to be

the story is over she makes him be

wholly delightful one, and there is a
real Bushman fight in it

Blanching (dipping Into hot water)

prevents cloudy liquor, makes' the
peas tender, and also' removes some
of the gluey substance which coats
them.
Blanch by dipping the shelled peas
in a clean cheesecloth sack, into boll-
ins; water one to four minutes, de
pending on the age of the peas. Put
instantly, while hot. Into coM water
(1 teaspoonful salt to 1 quart water)
and remove after about 30 seconds.
Drain and pack to within r.ne-half
Inch of the top of the previously
boiled jar. If the Jar is filled too full
a few peas at the top may burst and
make the liquor cloudy. Add season
ing (one-third level teaspoontul salt
and two-thirds level teospoonful su
gar to the quart) and fill with hot
water and paddle well to remove all
air busbies. Partially seal Jars. ,
Processing with steam under pres
sure is recommended. Process pints
46 minutes under pressure of 10
pounds. Seal Immediately, cool In a
draft-free place. When cold test for
leaks, and store In a cuol, dark, dry
place.
If the Intermittent boiling process
I used, boil for 90 minutes on the
first day, and 60 minutes on the sec
ond and third days- Before each sub-sc-quent
boiling the covers must be
loosened, and after each boiling the
covers must be securely tightened to
make sealing complete. Cool, test for
leaks, and store.
If a single period boiling process is
used, place the Jars in the canner and
boll fur at least three hours. Seal,
cool, test and store.

coma passed 45.B7S.OOO pounds of
tea, as against New York's 42,000,000
pounds, and 41.000.(00 pounds,
through Km Francisco. This Is the
largest amount of tea that has ever
been examined at any single port In
the United States in a year. Kxperts
are hired to taste the different brands
and qualities of tea as It comes
through, making a regular objura
tion out of It. and receiving high salaries.
