'The I'&thfindei of the Rocky Moun- tuins" he was called, and he deserved the title, for his celebrated exploring expedition across tho continent in 1843-1845 did much to increase the knowledge of our vast and then a!-, most unknown domain beyond the Mississippi. Although the main ob ject of this expedition was to find a "new and better road" over the moun tains and plains to Oregon and nor thern California, Fremont found time to observe the geology and mineral resources as well as the natural his tory and thnology of the region he traversed. Thus, on August 19, 184S, when the expedition, having turned north from the old Oregon Emigrant Road, found itself on what Is now culled Little Muddy Creek, near the site of the present well-known coal town of Cumberland, Uinta County. Wyo., Fremont discovered a profusion of plant remains in a conspicuous band of indurated clay along the creek. He collected as many of these fossil plants as he "could conveniently carry." and on his return they were studied and described by Jnmes Hall, then and for many years thereafter palcrtologist to the state of New York. Hall described about ten species of plants, all ferns, and decided that their age was Jurassic. Nothing fur ther was found out.about these plants for more than 0 years, or until 1900. when the locality on Utile Muddy Creek was rediscovered by members of the I'nlted States Geological sur vey. These geologists made large collections of plants, which, together with a part of Frecmonfa original collection that curiously came to light In the National Museum, hove now been studied by F. H. Knowlton, of the I'nlted States Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, who pre sents the results of the study In a re port (Professional Paper 108-F) Just issued. These plants are wonderfully well preserved, especially the ferns, which In individuals outnumber all other kinds two to one. The closest living representatives of certain of these ferns are found in the Polyne sian Inslands. Hesides the ferns there are waxberrles tMyrlca), willows. Yaks, fig trees, cinnamon trees, ara llns, and a curious plijnt known as Denahpiquet. which Is not closely re lated to any living plant. A glimpse of the Insect life of the time Is shown by a mass of egKs on one of the leaves and a burrow In the substance of an other small leaf. This burrow is so perfectly preserved and so similar to the work of living Insects that it Is hard to believe It was made some mil lions ot years ago. Deaf and dumb thirty-five years, and the last fifteen months an inmate of an in sane asylum, JoBsel Getzelowitz, forty, a native of Kovno, Kurrla, has had both speech and bearing wonderfully restored. Today he possesses all his faculties, says he wags never Insane, and converses Intelligently in three languages, none of which is his na tive tongue. At the age of five the boy, Jossel. was suddenly struck deaf und dumb, the result, he believes, of a disease. Thus he grew to manhood, married, and became the father of one child, now thirteen years old, and some where in Russia, the father believes. Aug. 11 Although the receipts from Ore gon at the mint and smelters at Kar,. Francisco show a falling off in out put of gold for that state of some 75,000 for the first five months of 1917. as compared witn tne corres ponding period of 181S, it ia not an Indication according to Shas. G. Yale of the United States Geological Sur vey, Department 01 vow imcuv., the' mines, as a whole are less pros, perous this year than last. It may be stated, as confirming this opinion. that aaide from the increase In gold and silver in 1915. as compared with 1915,the copper output of the fetate increased 794 per cent, so that the to tal metal yeald ofOregon In 191 in. creased $939,969 or 47 per cent, as campared with 1915. A steady in crease of copper yeald Is apparent In 1917 and the placer mines are also Increasing the gold yeald. although the deep mines are not producing so much gold as In 1916. As the copper output is augmented, so is that of silver. It was not until 1916 that the Homestead Iron Dyke mine in Baker County was reopened arter years o. idleness, and is now by far the largest copper and silver producer in the state. In June of this year a new body of ore has been discovered in the 850 level of the mine. A large concentrator has been -constructed, and the flotation process is used. Other Important deep mine producers in Baker County are the Baker Mines Company and Cornucopia Mines Com. pany in Cornupia district; and the Commercial Mining Company. in Morman Basin district. The largest nlacer producers in the county (and the State) is the Powder River Dredge Company, operating two dredges in Cracker Creek district, and having a very prosperous season. The Lac lede mine, near Baker, has been re opened this year; and the old Ben Harrison mine , at Sumpter, once a large producer, has been sold to Idaho men. who intend making ex tensive developments.
