He swallowed tne oau umi a bogus orcnara t.-uiiijiij' threw out to him in far away New York. He was one of many who were similarly hooked. Esche contracted with the Northwestern association, ot Oregon City-, for a ten acre or- iharrf. for which he was to pay $3000. At the end of five years the land was to be in bearing trees. When that period had ex pired. Esche. after payment of $1500, packed his belong ings in New York and, full of anticipation and hope, came out to Oregon to take posses sion of his orchard, from which, according to the repre sentations of the sellers, he was sure to have an easy living and abundant profits to lay by fnr a rninv flav. Then followed the old, old story. His arrival was a day of disillusionment. Instead of the bearing fruit trees that were to be on the land, there were only stones and big stumps. The home that he had nlanned and the happy and profitable life work he had so often pictured to him- aoif uroro a delusion ana a snare. He did not even have title to the property. It was so heavily mortgaged that there was no chance for him ever to get title. Swindled, baffled anrt heaten. there was nothing to do but to set about to earni enough money with which toj eet out of Oregon, and this nei has done. The harm done Oregon by! such happenings is irrepar able. The jailing of the swin dler, as was done in this case, doesn't return the money to the swindled. Portland Journal. soda Fountain for Sale.
