THE SUSSEX DENIAL ftp HE German note on the Sussex case presents the Teutonic side of the af fair and no one can read the Von Jagow note without being impressed with the plausibil ity of the statement. It is a specific denial that the Sussex was sunk by a German subma rine. The note should reduce the much talked of tension between the United States and Ger many, if such tension exists. This was to be expected because most liquor using people had secured supplies before the sa loons west out of existence, those supplies now being ex hausted in many cases. The figures show that a to tal of 370 people in this coun ty had liquor shipped to them during March. This is a small percentage when it is consid ered Umatilla county has over 20,000 inhabitants. The prohibition law will not be broken down by the ship ment of liquor to people for their own use. The danger arises from bootlegging. If people are allowed fo carry on illicit liquor sales, prohibition will be discredited to the ex tent the practise is permitted.
