There is need of a probe into affairs connected with the re cent city election. Rut it should be a thoroughgoing probe and it should be unbiased. It should line laws ot the state of Oregon. Our form of government re j quires that the ballot box be protected against violators. In ithis tate we hare a corrupt practices act to further protect the purity of elections. There i talk to the effect that at the I city election every law in the ; election code was violated, j Certainly many of the provis ions of the law were thrown to 'the winds. If this sort of work is to go ! unchecked the violations will become more and more flag rant each time. One candidate will disregard the law because he knows his opponent is doing so and he will desire to keep even with him. Such a state of affairs tends to political bedlum and all the evils at tendant thereon. There should be a grand jury investigation of recent af fairs here and it should be taken up in such a way as to guarantee impartialitv. It 'should not be to set aside the ' election or to validate the elec tion but to bring out the truth, and to emphasize in a convinc ing manner the fact there are i certain laws governing cam paign methods and election1 day proceedings and that those ;laws cannot be broken with impunity. It is an appropriate job fori the attorney general. HAWAII'S PREPAREDNESS we would have an militia 3.000.000 s Probably the for Hawaii's h( membership may the fact tht re is i native population organized ong. xplanation vy guard e found in ' immense rid a host t Japanese on the island. The whites may deem a consider able military force necessary! for their own protection and if so they have a reason of their I own for believing in prepared- fess. THEIR STRANGE CONDUCT ' q HEORETICALLY every one would like to see the war come to a close. It is laying a continent in waste ami in a manner threatens the safety of civilization. At the same time the quarrel, what ever it may have been, over which the war arose, is as far from solution as at the begin ning. Yet when Henry Ford makes a sincere, though probably hopeless, endeavor to forward the cause of peace, all he gets from the metropolitan press i ridicule and abuse. The aver age large citv paper considers any peace advocate as a luna tic. In their view there seems to be no sanity excepting in 'aughter and the propogation of misery. - It is a queer world. The facts of the case hardly bear out this conclusion. The chief object of the bond sale was to raise a credit of1 $500,000,000 for two of our best customers. Despite the fact that the amount asked for was the largest ever raised by One country for another, that j the borrowers were engaged ini a great war against a most for- j inidable antagonist, and that investors here were unaccus- tomed to lending money out-j Bide of the country, the entire amount was subscribed for in a few hours after the subscrip tion books were opened.
