To some extent It Is really unfair
to compare eastern prices for cattle
as well as trade conditions with those

dressed product In the middle west
and In the east, where the general
population has received some benefits
from the sales of war materials, gen
eral business conditions are much Im
proved. On the other hand, the bus
iness structure of the Pacific north
west Is founded to a considerable ex
tent upon the lumber Industry. While
there has been recently signs of some
revival In the lumber Industry, still
the situation Is still critical. Lumber
ing Interests and railroad construc
tion work generally call for liberal
supplies of meats, and, with this de
mand absent, there is a much curtail
ed output for supplies.
There is not the slightest doubt
that prices for cattle at North Port
land are much out of line with those
in effect east of the Rockies, but this
is 'Scarcely the blame of killers. Sup
ply and demand are the great factors
in the market, and just now the sup
plies are greater than actual require
ments of the trade.

There was no mistaking the trend
ot the swine market at North Port
li'nd during the week. It was down
ward. Seemingly there was no help
for this condition. Receipts, while
much decreased from' those of the
previous week, were still above the
wants of killers, and .this naturally
forced the general range of value
lower, even though a further climb of
prices was shown at eastern points

Mutton situation stnmg.
Mutton market was the only strong
feature nf the local livestock trade for
the week; in fact, it has been the only
bullish factor during recent weeks.
Receipts are not liberal, and most of
the stuff coming forward is of indif
ferent quality, with the bulk of it pur
chased direct at country points by
local killers. Little stuff has been
available for the open market and
prices were easily maintained at an
advance,
