With the excep t'.on of mutton, and veal, which were vtry scarce, the market for livestock was of most unsatisfactory nuture lo- eally during the week In fact, stm liar condition Is shown at all Pacific northwest points. I a few of these being sold at last week's extreme mark for steers at 7, 1 price performance for most of the of ferings ws scarcely satisfactory to shippers. Then are naturally two sides to the controversy regarding prevailing values In the Pacific northwest, and both sides are right in certain things. Were wholesalers i imply the ones to complain rearding!5 the 1 ick of outlet for fresh meats, I E there might poKHllily be some room to doubt the slowness of trade, but re tailers have made the same complaint. Naturally, when bualnexs Is slow the margin of profit on the limited sales must be greater than when fhe vol ume Is greater, and this potmllily ac counts in a measure for the extreme low prices offered for the bulk of the cattle supplies, KaKlern Trade Is Different. To some extent It Is really unfair to compare eastern prices for cattle as well as trade conditions with those In effect in the Pacific northwest, be- S caune there is practically no similar-'E Ity existing in the markets for thejE dressed product In the middle west and In the east, where the general population has received some benefits from the sales of war materials, gen eral business conditions are much Im proved. On the other hand, the bus iness structure of the Pacific north west Is founded to a considerable ex tent upon the lumber Industry. While there has been recently signs of some revival In the lumber Industry, still the situation Is still critical. Lumber ing Interests and railroad construc tion work generally call for liberal supplies of meats, and, with this de mand absent, there is a much curtail ed output for supplies. There is not the slightest doubt that prices for cattle at North Port land are much out of line with those in effect east of the Rockies, but this is 'Scarcely the blame of killers. Sup ply and demand are the great factors in the market, and just now the sup plies are greater than actual require ments of the trade. General cattle market range: Select steers 16.5018 7.00 Best hay fed steers 6.256.35 Good to choice 6. no ' 6.25 Ordinary to fair 5.00&5.75 Best cows 5. 00&5.25 Good to prime 4.504 75 Fancy bulls 4 25 Ordinary bulls 2.50ft 3.50 Best calves 7. 50 8.00 Sulno Situation Critical. To some extent a similar situation Ik shown in the swine trade at all Pacific northwest points.' Killers here are holding a big surplus of hog pro ducts. far more money than the present ba sis for hogs; therefore, they are big losers by the present stagnation in the swine trade as are producers themselves. There was no mistaking the trend ot the swine market at North Port li'nd during the week. It was down ward. Seemingly there was no help for this condition. Receipts, while much decreased from' those of the previous week, were still above the wants of killers, and .this naturally forced the general range of value lower, even though a further climb of prices was shown at eastern points General hog market range: Best light .4 t6 80Ca6.85 Medium light 6 706.75 Good to heavy 6.506.60 Rough to heavy 5.50 6.00 Mutton situation stnmg. Mutton market was the only strong feature nf the local livestock trade for the week; in fact, it has been the only bullish factor during recent weeks. Receipts are not liberal, and most of the stuff coming forward is of indif ferent quality, with the bulk of it pur chased direct at country points by local killers. Little stuff has been available for the open market and prices were easily maintained at an advance, General mutton market: Choice spring lambs $6.60 $ 6.75 Common spring lambs 5.75 ft 6.25 Common spring lambs ... 5.75 q 6.25 Choice yearling wethers . . 5.50 Good earlings 4. 756 5.25 Old wethers 4 75 5.00 Choke light ewes 4.5(i4.75 Good ewes 3.75 0 1. 00 Rough heavy ewes 3 .50 3.60 Slow to Finance fho Building of a Little Homo ARE YOU A YOUNG MAN? just getting started in business, or have you a steady job drawing a good wage or salary, working hard, ambitioua for the future, married to ihe sweetest of wives, and perhaps with the first little ones spurring you on?
