day with 1 3 carloads of animals ar-1
riving at the North Portland stock
yards was passed. Prices were firm
with the week's average followed
closely.
An Increase in the receipts of hogs
and calves and a decrease in the re
ceipts of cattle and sheep Is shown by
the monthly report of the stockyards
association made public this morning.
The year to date Is falling a trifle
behind the previous year also.

is to return to this coast for a second
load for M. H. Houser, and the Rus
sian bark Fabrwohl for the same ex
porter, Oats also remained stiff during the
day.

Mllwaukie Gas to Be $1.
MILWAIKIE, Ore.. July 8. It was
announced here that Milwaukie people
will pay the Portland rate for gas, tl,
for each 1000 cubic feet, from the in
stallation of the gas mains. A canvass
of three days for gas consumers re
sulted In obtaining more than 100
families, and under the terms of the
franchise the Portland Gas & Coke
company provides gas at Portland
rates, with a 50-cent minimum rate.
Bull Run water will be turned in
the new mains laid by the city and
Streib's addition will be the first to
get this water. A special election wilt
be called In the near future to pro
vide additional bond sales to com
plete the distribution system.

in a fire which rnn over 10 acres of
timber on the farm of William Serf
lintr, on the South Santiam river, be

timber and an additional 600 cords of
wood. About 50 fire fighters summon
ed from the surrounding country
stopped it.
The origin of the fire Is unknown.
