Cheater Klrkpatrick. eon of R. F.
Kirkpatrlck, la the latest speeder to
be caught by the officers. He plead
ed guilty yesterday afternoon and paid
a five dollar fine.
Gets Present of Salmon.
Officer Alex Manning received by
express today from Stanfleld a salmon
three feet long and many smaller
fish. No name or message accom
panied the gift but It was acceptable
nevertheless.

this morning from Portland where he
had been for a few days.

Merrltt Lewis Warren, for !8 years
a resident ot Umatilla county, died
suddenly at 6 o'clock this morning at
his farm home IS miles southwest ot
Pendleton In the Coombs' Canyon lo
cality. He had been slightly ill for
several weeka but yesterday was feel
ing so well that he was about his
work. This morning at 4 o'clock he
awoke and was seized with a violent
Illness which resulted In death two
hours later. Heart trouble is given
as the cause.
Mr. Warren was 63 years old, hav-(
ing been born August 29, 1851. He
came west to California in 1883 and
seven years later moved to Umatilla
county where he has since followed
farming. For a number of years he
lived on Tutullla street In this city.
He Is survived by a widow. Mary
Johnson Warren and five children,

The funeral will be held at the
Folsom chapel In this city tomorrow
afternoon at 2 o'clock. Deceased
was a member of the United Artisans
and that lodge will have charge.
Colvln Trial May 90.
Word reaches here from Canyon
City that Ben Colvln, prominent Hit
ter rancher, will go to trial on a per
jury charge on May 20, the court
having set that date. Col. J. H. Ha
ley of this city and Otis Patterson of
Canyon City will defend him.
A student ot Des Moines has made,:
a tiny electric motor which is hardly i
half aa large as a copper cent. It Is
a little over a quarter of an Inch high
and weighs 20 grains. It Is thought!

F. B.( Swayxe of Hermiston has been
appointed administrator of the estate
of the late William Glasson who died
at Hermiston April 13 leaving an es
tate in and around that town valued
at $9000. The appointment was made
upon the petition of C. R. Glasson of
Florence, Colorado, only child of the
deceased, who Is here now.

National Charities Convention.
INDIANAPOLIS, May 13. This
city cast a greedy eye towards Balti
more today where the delegates to the
Auto Club Meets Tomorrow.
President Rltner of the Umatilla
County Automobile Club, announces
a meeting for tomorrow afternoon at
4 o'clock In the Pendleton Commer
cial association rooms. One of the
matters to be taken up will be a
proposal from a man now In the city
to get out an auto directory for Uma
tilla county. The by-laws of the as
sociation will also be submitted.
Milton High School Closes.
County Superintendent I. E. Young
returned this morning from Milton
where last evening he attended the
graduating exercises of the Milton
high school and presented the diplo
mas to the 12 graduates. Eleven of
the 12 graduates started In the high
school when Prof. Young was the Mil
ton superintendent and It was upon
their request that he delivered the
diplomas. The commencement ad
dress was made by Dean Proctor of
Pacific University.
West End is Soaked.
Assessor C. P. Strain arrived home
last evening from the west end of the
county and reports that that section
has been soaked by the recent rains
until there are puddles of water stand
ing in the sands. The government ob
server announces that over two inch
es of rain has fallen around Pendle
ton during the present stormy spell.
Mr. Strain states that last Sunday
there was a precipitation of .46 of an
inch in less than half an hour at Her
miston. part of the precipitation being
hail which did some damage to the
fruit.

Plgott Secure Promotion.
J. J. Plgott, attendant In charge of
the receiving ward at the Eastern Or
egon State Hospital since Its establish
ment, left today for McNeil's Is'and,
Wash., accompanied by Mrs. Plgott
and children, to accept at an advance
ot salary a position as attendant In
the federal prison there. Mr. P'gott
has been In the service of this state
for five years, having been at Salem
before coming here. He secured his
new position through a civil service
examination in which he ranked high
est of all those taking the test. The
examination was open to applicants
from five states and Mr. Plgott had
an average grade of 95 per cent.
