Merrltt Lewis Warren, for !8 years a resident ot Umatilla county, died suddenly at 6 o'clock this morning at his farm home IS miles southwest ot Pendleton In the Coombs' Canyon lo cality. He had been slightly ill for several weeka but yesterday was feel ing so well that he was about his work. This morning at 4 o'clock he awoke and was seized with a violent Illness which resulted In death two hours later. Heart trouble is given as the cause. Mr. Warren was 63 years old, hav-( ing been born August 29, 1851. He came west to California in 1883 and seven years later moved to Umatilla county where he has since followed farming. For a number of years he lived on Tutullla street In this city. He Is survived by a widow. Mary Johnson Warren and five children, l!ay M., Dwlght O. and Walker C. One of the matters to be taken up will be a proposal from a man now In the city to get out an auto directory for Uma tilla county. The by-laws of the as sociation will also be submitted. Milton High School Closes. County Superintendent I. E. Young returned this morning from Milton where last evening he attended the graduating exercises of the Milton high school and presented the diplo mas to the 12 graduates. Eleven of the 12 graduates started In the high school when Prof. Young was the Mil ton superintendent and It was upon their request that he delivered the diplomas. The commencement ad dress was made by Dean Proctor of Pacific University. West End is Soaked. Assessor C. P. Strain arrived home last evening from the west end of the county and reports that that section has been soaked by the recent rains until there are puddles of water stand ing in the sands. The government ob server announces that over two inch es of rain has fallen around Pendle ton during the present stormy spell. Mr. Strain states that last Sunday there was a precipitation of .46 of an inch in less than half an hour at Her miston. part of the precipitation being hail which did some damage to the fruit.
