GRAND JURY AFTER Presumably crazed by booze, Wal ter "Shorty" Saunders yesterday eve ning in Pilot Rock assaulted G. V. Risley, a butcher of that place, with a knife, stabbing him in the stomach and in the arm before he could be overpowered. Deputy District Attor ney Keatoj-Vtnt out to Pilot Rock this morning and appeared against Saunders in the Justice court. He was bound over to the grand Jury. The assault, so far as has been as certained, was without provocation. Saunders, who had been working about Pilot Rock, went into the New comb meat shop last evening and ask ed Risley to deliver some meat to testaurant. When Risley appeared at ' the reslauiunt with the moat, Saun- j ders drew his pocket knife, opened the Made, about five Inches in length, j und with threats to kill the other,; rushed at him. An In vestigation of the reason for the sud- den increase in the price of food stuffs is promised. Government offi cials and congressmen are demanding immediate action. They asserted wholesale dealers unnecessarily hav raised the r rices, using the European war as an excuse. Officials of the de partment of justice indicated that McReynoldjS Is considering invoking the Sherman anti-trust law to crush the conspiracy to boost prices. U. S. Attorney Wllkerson of Chica go, was instructed to start an imme diate investigation to determine whether the meat packers are respon sible. Congress Is expected to order a probe. This morning the Jobbers, through Penland Bros., notified the local mer chants that another 30 cent advance had taken place and this afternoon at 1:30 notification came of another 70 cent raise. The Jobbers now quote $8.40 as the f. o. b. price to local re tailers. PARIS, Aug. 12. French and Ger man troops faced one another today from. Liege along a line running al most due south In Belgium to the frontier of Luxemburg, according to an announcement made by the war office. From Luxemburg the Una runs along the border to Longwy and from there along the Franco-German frontier to Switzerland. Most of the frontier fighting thus far, it waa stated, has been between cavalry forces. French troops. It was added, hold the Vosges mountain passes. It waa asserted that ln the engagements already fought the French troops ahowed auperiorlty to the Germans. Fight at Tirlcmont. A general engagement is in pro gress at Tlrlemont, Belgium, it waa announced, the Belgians, it waa stat ed, having been attacked at dawn by German forces. Up to a late hour this afternoon it was said the battle was still raging. The war office Issued the following announcement; "The Belgians' are energetically resisting the German force. Infantry, supported by artillery, Is engaged." It la understood that Belgian, l French and British allies are rushin j to Tirlemont to aid the defenders. Kaiser Stopped Assault.' BERLIN, Aua. 1.'.
