111 GENERAL ADVANCE
(Courtesy of The Journal.)
PORTLAND, Ore. Feb. 10. All
through the local livestock trade there
was a better feeling at the opening of
the week's business this morning.
Advances were general although rath
er small. 1
There was a very marked increase
In the. volume of swine offered at
North - Portland today compared with
a week ago. Even this failed to hold
in check the price, which showed an
advance, even in the early trade, of
5c over the extreme figures of last
week.
Today's advance In the price "of
hogs here comes as a resul't of the
general demund for supplies from lo
cul as well as outside killers. In fact
the local Interests are so much inter
ested In swine at this time that they
are sending their buyers to other
Mates In order to secure additional of
ferings. General hog market range:
Top killers $8.55 0 8.60
Good and light 8.35 8.40
Heavy 8.25
Rough and heavy 6.75 7.00
Cattle Market Hits $8.
While there was a very heavy mar
keting of cattle at North Portland
over SunJay, the trend of the trade
was generally of excellent character
and some sales were made at an ad
vance of 10c to 21c over the extreme
figures quoted last Monday with the
price $7.85 8.
Today's big showing of cattle in
the local yards was really no surprise
to the trade. Some of the stuff that
came forward was intended for this
market . two weeks ago when values
dropped so badly. The stuff was held
In the country and today's big show
ing Is the result. Notwithstanding
this there was a generally good feel
ing In the trade. Buyers from vari
ous points were in the market early
for supplies and all the good stuff
was meeting with favor.
General cattle market:
Best grain fed steers .... $7.85 8.00
Ordinary grain fed steers . 7.75
Best hay fed steers 7.60
Poor steers 5.00 5.60
BeHt heifers 6.75
Best cows 7.00 7.25
Medium cows 6.75
Poor cows 5.50 5.65
Ordinary bulls 6.00 5.25
Fancy bulls 5.75
Beet calves 9.00
SIkn-p Situation Katlicr Good.
There Is a rather good situation in
the mutton and lamb trade at North
Portland. Today's run was not near
ly as heavy as a week ago, while de
mand was better. With killers open
ly showing a demand for lambs, the
outlook for prices here is rather good
although little change If indicated 1
at the moment.
General mutton market range:
Best lambs $6. B0 ti 6.75
Yearling wethers 5.60 5. 75
Old wethers 5.25 B. 50
Fancy ewes 4.50
Ordinary ewes 3.00 4.50
