HEAVY (Courtesy of The Journal.) PORTLAND. Ore., Jan. 13. Thi greatest run of livestock that ever entered the Portland market arrived cer Sunday at North Portland. To tal arrivals were 98 cars. In the shipment were 2935 hogs, 1261 cattle, 3 calves and 4309 sheep. The big run was expected; in fact forecast in these reports Saturday. The weakness in cattle was In fence, vith values again lower. Too many cattle have been received here re cently, and practically all of the hading killers report a big surplus on hand, which they are anxious to dispose of before taking on additional supplies. Naturally in the face of such a condition they are not inclined to pay former extreme values. C'AXADF W INDIANS DIKS AT 81 OTTAWA. Ont., Jan. 13 David Laird, Indian Commissioner, former minister of the Interior and first gov ernor of Northwest Territory, died here, aged 81 years. Laird was the owner of the Char lottetown Patriot, and an active jour nalist when he entered public life in 1853 as a delegate to Ottawa to con clude negotiations for the entrance of Prince Edwards Island Into the Do minion of Canada. On the consum mation of that event, he was chosen minister of the interior. Since 1898, he, had devoted his en ergies largely to the relations between the government and Indians, among whom he established a deputation for integrity, sympathy and fair judg ment. Practically all the Indian tribes In the Dominion called him "The Big Chief." He was the author of p book on "Our Indian Treaties." In putting new lighting conductors on St. Paul's Cathedral, London, a part of an old lightning rod installed by Benjamin Franklin 140 years ago was found.
