(Special Correspondence.) Adams, Ore., June 21. The nicest wedding of the season took place in the Baptist church on Thursday at noon. The contracting' parties were Edgar L. Xorvell of Helix and Mary Stockton of Adams. The groom was clothed in a dark blue serge and the bride was robed in white silk and lace. Both groom and bride were very popular in Adams and Helix, the groom is one of Helix's business men and the bride was one of Oregon's mast successful school teachers. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers by the young people of the church and was filled to its capacity with invited guests Before the ar rival of the bridal party Eleanor Stockton sang "O Promise Me." Miss Sadie Young of La Grande played the wedding march. Victor Mason of Car son, Washington, a school mate of the groom, was best man and Augusta Stockton as bridesmaid. The cere mony was performed by Rev. J. W. Stockton father of the bride. A swell dinner was served at the home of the bride after which the' happy couple left in an auto for Walla Walla. Eight girls as follows: Stella Lieual len Mina Peringer, Celia Simonton, Mable Mclntire, Jessie Chestnut, Ruth McKenzie, Winnie Gless, Ereleene Bowling all took the 2:30 train at Adams and overtook the bride and groom at Milton and showered them with rice, and returned home on the 4:20. The bride and groom received many costly presents. They will spend a few days at Seaside and then they will return to Helix where they will make their future home. They have the congratulations of their many friends. Mrs. E. C. Bowling was a Pendlteon visitor Tuesday. Minnie Peringer was a Pendleton visitor Wednesday. Mrs. A. J. Baker went to Tendleton Wednesday. Will Moore of the Pacific Elevator company of Pendleton was an Adams business visitor Wednesday. Ira Stoll was a Pendleton visitor Wednesday. J. T. Lieuallen was a Pendleton vis itor Wednesday. Dr. Sharp of Athena was called to see Mrs. C. Sands who is ill. E. G. Marquis, city druggist, and Arthur Watrus went to Pomeroy Wed nesday in their auto to visit relatives for a few dys. E. G. Marquis re turned home Thursday from Pomeroy. Ethel Peringer of Milton came down Thursday to attend the wedding of Edgar Xorvell and May Stockton. Logan Peringer of Walla' Walla was visiting relatives in Adams Thursday. Bert ' Kirby of the Adams Cash Store and Pearl Hale one of Oregon's extensive wheat men were Pendleton visitors Friday. (Special Correspondence.) Gibbon, Ore., June 21. Mr. George C. Brace and Miss Anna May Thomp son both of Gibbon were quietly mar ried June 14 in Pendleton, Rev. Na than Evans, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Brace left Sunday for Gibbon where they will reside. Rufus Campbell, Clarence Burden and Will Brace of Athena were here camping and fishing this week. Guests are arriving daily at Bing ham Springs and a big crowd is ex pected for the 4tn of July. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Thompson were in Athena last week on business. P. A. McPhee was In Pendleton Sat urday. C. C. Thompson, O.-W. R. & N. agent at Gibbon was in Pendleton Saturday. Will Thompson is in Portland this week. Crazed with pain and harassed with the prospect of going .through life a cripple, Martin Michael, a ranch hand on the Grosscop place, on the Yakima river, took his own life. A short time before the tragedy, Michael while in the act of chopping feed, got his right hand caught in the machine, and it was completely sev ered at the wrist. Michael went to the bunk house, secured a six shooter and with his left hand sent a bullet through his head. The cook, hearing a shot, made an Investigation, traced blood to the bunkhouse and found Michael lying on the floor dead. Skeller on the Powell Valley road three miles this side of Gresham. Shortly after 2 o'clock Mrs. Smith was awakened by Hatton, whom she found sitting on the side of her bed. Her husband, who works at night for the Standard OH company, was ab sent. Hatton threatened to kill her If she made an outcry. Suddenly, he grabbed the frighten ed woman about the neck and at tempted to hold a bottle of chloroform under her nose. She fought him des perately. In the struggle she upset the bottle and Its contents drained out. Hatton then jumped through a window and escaped. ably was accidental as the old gentle man was alone at the time. He is survived by three' sons and a daugh ter. His wife has been dead for a number of years. Rifle Bullet Pierces Heart. Joseph, June 21. Sunday, while squirrel hunting, Chas. Carl Mauch Hcinounx His Inability to lnlnt Pictures of Years' Dreaming. j Chicago. June 21. Despondent be cause his eyes failed him just when he conceived, after years of dreaming, the picture he hoped would make him famous, Carl Mauch, an artist, took poison and died from its effects. He was 63. and rapidly losing his sight. Recently Mauch told a fellow mem ber of the Palette and Chisel Club that the inspiration of his life had come to him and bemoaned the fact that his eyes were falling, and that he never again would touch a brush to canvas. Mauch was born In Wurtemberg, Germany, and his club fellows tell a story of how, when a boy, he whip ped the future king of the province. According to them. It was the rule at the school which Mauch attended that the prince should always be the u'lnner of any game. Consternation reigned in the offices of the Pacific Coast Steamship company when it was discovered that the specifications for the liner Congress Included room for only three bottles of beer. A drafts man had mistaken the word "barrel" for bottles. The mistake has been rectified. Oakland Cal., June 21 While two leading organizations scoured the city to find him that he might be guest of honor at a banquet, Charles That cher, "good roads apostle," was ar rested at Alameda for obstructing the' streets with his Spanish mule team. He was released on his promise to leave town. Alameda boosters, learn ing his Identity, are now trying to square themselves and their city. Salem, Ore., June 21. Judge Bush ey and Dr. J. X. Smith are pondering the case of Robert France of Hub bard, who told them he had been driven insane by the constant nagging of his wife. The court Is investigat ing his real mental condition. France said he is the father of eleven chil dren. Action has been postponed. Berlin. June 21. Offi cers of the cruiser Maryland have no tified the navy department that the taking aboard of coal from the Beh- rlng Lake fields for an official naval test will be delayed until high water on the Bering river. The barges and special boats built to bring out the coal were found to draw too much water for use at this time. Seattle, June 21. Seth Mann, per sonal representative of President Wil son, accompanied by several magazine writers and a delegation of business representatives, will spent forty days In Alaska visiting the bituminous coal fields and Investigating general con ditions in the gold camps.
