Ar rangement for the annual junket trip to the Willamette valley and oth er western Oregon points have been, practically completed. The party la scheduled to leave Ia Grande on train No. 17 on January 20th, arriv ing at Portland that evening, where they will take a special car, leaving Portland Borne time during the night and arriving in Salem early on the morning of the 21st. A letter from the Salem board of trade to Secretary Humphreys of the La. Grande Com mercial club, extending the courtesies of that occasion to the visitors, has been received. The entire day and evening will be spent in Salem, the Merchants' excursion train from Port land picking up the special car next morning, taking them to Albany where the Oregon Retail Merchants' association hold their annual meet ing. On the morning of the 22nd the visitors will go to Corvallis, an invi tation having been extended by the officials of the O. A. C. to visit the Institution and the city. The visitors will return to Albany and take ir the banquet given the visitors that evening, returning to Portland on an early train on the morning ol the 23rd. Tickets will be good leav ing Portland on train No. 6 on the evening of the 27th, thus giving any one desiring it the advantage of three business days in Portland on the re turn trip. About 30 have signified their Intentions of going on this trip if they can get away from their bus ineas. The success of the trip last year being great It is expected this year to eclipse any stunt that was pulled off previously and thus put La Grande and Union county on the map in BtlU larger letters than ever before. O. A. C. FACULTY MEN HAVE BLACK EYES AS RESULT OF FIST CLASH Regent May Act Following Encoun ter of prof. E. B. Moore and C. A. Dobcll. Oregon Agricultural College, Cor vallis, Jan. 13. A disagreement over the matter of some typewriting rib bons, to be used on the machines of the commerce department, ' led to a petty quarrel, which may lead to some serious action on the part of the board of regents of the Oregon Agricultural college. A couple of black eyes are the only visible results, at the pres ent time, but developments will fol low. The trouble is said to have started when Assistant Professor E. B. Moore of the stenography classes went over to the business office to get some new typewriter ribbons for his machines. C. A. Dobell, business manager of the college, stated that there were already some ribbons at the college book store. The ribbons did not suit Pro fessor Moore, who asked Dobell to or der some more. Upon the refusal of the latter party to order them, an argument ensued, which resulted in blows being ex changed. Both of the participants In the affair have black eyes. But fur than that, nothing could be ascer tained definitely. The matter has been taken up by the proper authorities, and a rigid in vestigation Is being conducted. Boise, Idaho. James Whlttaker, scarcely 11 years old. Is sering a term of from 10 to 60 years In the Idaho state penitentiary for the murder of his mother. Clad in the regulation prison garb of a striped suit made with knee trousers, the child Is con fined not far from the cell of Harry Orchard. The young convict is not allowed to associate with the convicts in the prison yards, but is kept in the library where under the direction of the war den and the librarian, the little fellow daily studies and recites his lessons In much the same manner as he did before he was taken from the school room. Whlttaker has been a prisoner at the Institution only two months, but he has unusual privileges. Although Bertlllon measurements have been taken and he has been photographed and numbered 1.949, the warden and the guards do not believe for a mo ment that the boy prisoner will try to escape. The ordinary prisoner must have served the greater part of his sentence before receiving the freedom of the prison grounds outside the walls, but Whittaker's case is a singular one, and when the boy is not studying or reciting his lessons he may be seen about the outside of the walls, play ing hide and seek with the warden's children or amusing himself by teas ing the bloodhounds. Not every liberty has been granted to the boy, however, for at 6 o'clock when the gong sounds, he files through the great iron gateway. In a clear shrill voice he gives his num ber to the turnkey, who counts him as one among the 260 prisoners. Toung Whlttaker, in August 1912, shot and Instantly killed his mother on a ranch near Sarllda, Fremont county. The mother was doing the family washing. She did not have sufficient strength with which to turn the wringer. She asked her son to-, help her. He refused. His father spanked him and order ed him to do the work. He did not turn the wringer fast enough to suit the mother, so she spanked him. Shortly afterward she left the house. When she returned the child had pro--cured his father's shotgun'.
