It is well for the good name of V)regon that the law forbids allowing the name of Dan Kella- her to go upon the bal lot as candidate for presidential elector as well as for state sena tor. There was a great chance for r ugly situation to result from hav ing Kellaher's name on both the re publican and bull moose presidential tickets. Had he remained upon the Fallot and been elected he .would 'have bi-en forced to prove untrue to one candidate or the other. Xo matter whom Kellaher might "have favored it would have been a bad state of affairs. It would have meant confusion in the electoral col- leee and laid the foundation for - squabbling, possibly of a dangerous' Club at No. 20 t'nlon Square, " com ments the World "Hero Us a fur nished three-room flat with every ar ticle of American manufacture, all labeled with the high home price and the low foreign price. In The World's own 'cham ber of horrors' yesterday we showed a child's frock of white nainsook with Valenciennes edging for which the material could be bought In London for 11.0 7, the New York price being $1.71." A "chamber of horrors" for the west would fittingly exhibit farm ma chinery which Is told abroad by the International Harvester company at lower prices than In America. It would show that wlro nails used in building the houses of the west have cost us as much as $5.26 per gross ton more than the same nails have been sold for by the same company abroad. It would show that the structural stool used In the bridges of I matilla county has been sold abroad by the trust at prices ranging from $4.21 to $S.90 per ton cheaper than in America. It would show that the steel rails used on the railroads of the west have been costing as much as J3.S4 per ton more than they sell for abroad The tariff Is the most important Is sue in the election. The tariff Is at the very heart of the trust ciuestlon. a.- Governor ilson has so clearly shown In his speeches. Pendleton Is considerably In need of the very sort of work Mr. Cowen Is planning to do with Work That the property he has pur- lYiKllcton chased on the north XcmIm. side of the river former- known as Cole's ad dition. The town Is crowded this fall as never before. Though many new dwellings have been erected during the summer there has been a grat dearth of empty housea. People who have wanted to move Into town so a to secure the benefit of the schools have found it almost Impossible to rent houses. They have had to 'buy places in order to secure houses In which to live. Sometimes they have had to buy houses that were hardly worth buying. When they have bought they have usually driven other people out of their homes, put ting them to the Inconvenience of trying to rent houses when there are none to be had. There is need of a new residence district and of new houses thereon There is particular need Just now be cause when the branch asylum is opened many of those connected with the work of the Institution will have t) find houses here. Women who bear children and ro maln healthy are those who prepare their systems In advance of baby's coming. Unless the mother aids nature In Its pre-natal work the crisis finds her system unequal to the de mands made upon It, and she la often left with weakened health or chronic ailments. No remedy Is so truly a help to nature as Mother's Friend, and no expectant mother should fall to use It. It relieves the pain and discomfort caused hy the strain on the ligaments, makes pliant and elas tic those fibres and muscles which nature Is expanding, prevents numb ness of Umbs, and soothes the Inflam mation of breast glands. The system being thus prepared by Mother's Friend dispels the fear that the crisis may not be safely met Mother's Friend assures a speedy and complete recovery for the mother, and she la left a healthy woman to enjoy the rearing of her Friend Is sold at Mother's drug store b. Wilson's- AdvU-o To College Students. more seriously. So here's to Mr. Cowen and Irving- nature. The electoral college should j ton Heights, with paved street and le free from such business. It is concrete sidewalks. Viad enough to have trickery and Job bery in party conventions. The el toral college should be upon a .higher plane. The fact the bull moosers at their &ilem meeting named Ke"'aher as an elector when it was supposed his name would also appear as a repub lican nominee looks bad for the third brUPtde. It was a plain attempt to rhuat The republican party out of an vlertor regardless of how the state might vote It was not fair and it was not honest politics. It is a fine thing for Oregon and rvr the Oregon system that Secretary )luott has found the law bars Kel laher's name from the presidential (allot. .As far as this state Is concerned let us have a fair and open race for president anil let the best man win. c - In the east where the cost of living is bearing down upon the people even harder than in The Tariff ' the west the subject And Hie Cost of the tariff is one of Of IJving. extreme Importance In this presidential t-ampaign. Bold by all 'rake, tna!re Tamlly Ptlla for eonatipa On his itinerary the other day Governor Wilson passed through a college town in the middle west and in addressing the stu dents he advised them to take life Not to be boyish all the time but to grow up and to learn to think for themselves, not to be content with predigested mental food. It is advice the modern college world seems to need. There is too much of a tendency In colleges tow ard high living and light thinking. There is too much premium on polish and not enough on real culture. There is too much swath cutting and not enough work. Too much athlet ics and not enough physical training Too much voice work and not enough brain exercise. Governor Wilson himself Is a pro duct of the American college of 30 years ago when brains and ability counted for more than they do In the colleges of the present. If anyone does not think Pendle ton is preparing to handle a mammoth crowd at the Kound-up he should take a look at the enlarged grand stand and bleachers. When those seats are all filled up some other parts of the state will feel lonesome. There In much talk this fall of car shortage and shippers have been showered with all sorts of advice as to how to help the situation. There Is also another way to relieve the shortage. Let the railroads get more cars.
