R. & N. company baseball nine rossed hats with the Stanfield Mix ers, the score being 28 to 1 in fa vor of the Mixers. Master Reese Burk of Portland, will spend several weeks here as the guest of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Irwin. Jack Jackson and Ed. Tulford left for Spokane. Work commenced this morning on the new steel bridge across the Fur n'sh ditch, near the Wallace ranch, which, when completed, will make Stanfield a good wheat market. Mrs. H. A. Hulin was called to North Yakima on business for the Eshbach-Bruce company. Ernest Reynolds left for Tacoma, where he has accepted a position. E. B. Stanley of Fossil. Ore., Is here looking after the crop statistics of Eastern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Friegnitz and children spent Sunday at Hermaton and while there their little son, Char He. was badly bitten by a dog. F. B. Stuart and Charles Hoggarth .made a business trip to Hermiston this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Heppuley of Omaha, Xeb.. are in the city. Miss E. M. Unthanp made a busi ness trip to Hermiston today, Hev. Mack of Pendleton, was call-iance ing on friends in .Stanfield. it. D. Allen, of the Experimental farm of Hermiston. was in town Sat urday. He was accompanied by Pro fessor Dean of Corvallis. Several young people of Echo and Hermiston attended the ball game here Sunday. General baggage agents have gathered here today to prepare a statement cover ing the proposed limitation In the length of trunks to be presented to the interstate commerce commission, which has suspended the rules adopt ed by roads for this purpose. In Canada the proposition has been functioned by the Dominion railroad commission to place discriminatory charges on ail trunks more than 45 Inches long. 'CIIICKKX' Ralph Slilvely Stabbed, Wife Beaten Willi Brick In l-1rlit With Trio hi Street Aldermen Capture ' Assail ants. . Chicago. "There's some classy chicken." The remark, made by one of three men in referring to a woman who was passing with her husband, result ed in a fight in which the husband was stabbed, the wife was beaten over the head with a brick and the three assailants were captured and arrested by two aldermen after a chase for several blocks. Aldermen Victor J. Schaeffer and John H. Pauler of the Twenty-Second ward were the heroes of the bat tle. The three men were each fined $2.-1 and costs by Municipal Judge Williams In the Chicago avenu court on charges of disorderly conduct. IIiinIiiiihI Kesciiis Attack. The victims were Ra'ph Shively, 524 West North avenue, and Mrs Shively. They were passing the cor ner of West North and Cleveland ave nues when they noticed three men lounging near a building. The men were Andrew Teufei, 623 West North avenue; Frank Blecker, 1325 Larra bee street, and Conrad Schneider, 1827 Dayton street. Suddenly one of the men was heard to shout. "There's some classy chicken." Shively went lover and demanded that the men apologize. All three, he said set upon him and he was stabbed three times In the back. Mrs. Shively went to her hu band's assist- and was struck on the head with a brick. The two allermen were seated near a window in Rauter's residence, 515 West North avenue, and they said jthr-y saw the attack. They immedi- atelv ran to Shively's assistance, but before they could reach the corner the three asailnnts ran. The alder men gave chase. After a run of sev eral blocks the men stopped and sur rendered It was found that neither of Shive ly's injuries were serious and after they had been treated at a physici an's office they went home. Both appeared In court to press their charges. One of Shively's eyes was discolored and his wife was badly bruised about the head and face. The aldermen diil not appear in court. 'Mass United States Dis trict Judge Emory Speer of Macon, Ga , arrived In Boston on the City of Memphis from Savannah. When ask ed regarding the accusations made against him by Colonel W. A. Huff, former mayor of Macon, for which the Judge ordered Huff's arrest for fontempt, Speer said: "You will have to excuse me. This cuse Is before the court at present and I can not discuss it." It v.-sis reported on the water front that Judire Speer feared an attempt on his life and remained aboard all night rather than take a chance at landing at a late hour. After pouring carbolic arid and Iodine over a stock of bak ery goods to revenge himself, Jacob Cohen, 612 Maxwell street was fined $10 and costs by Municipal Judge Scully. Cohen quarrel with Louis Becker, a baker at 841 Maxwell street, nearly a month ago. Following t'lls he was very bitter, according to Becker. When Becker left his wagon back of his store, Cohen went to it and covered the goods with poison. When he was captured by Detective By water ' and Deasy of the Maxwell street station a bottle of carbolic acid was found in his clothing. MOKE COMPLAINTS I 'OR COMMERCE COMMISSION Washington, Aug. 13. The new rates of the Gould l'nes granting re ductions on grain from upper and lower Missouri river points, through Kansas City to Xew Orleans, which go Into effect today, are tile cause of new complaints to the interstate commerce commission by shippers of Baltimore. It is claimed that the reductions are made for the purpose of diverting export shipments that are ordinarily shipped through Xew York, Philadelphia and Boston. The com plaints are made through the export committee of the Central Freight -association. Rose crans, proprietor of the Hotel Lex Ington, Arkansas avenue and Pacific was held under $300 bail for the grand Jury by Magistrate Jogmetty on the charge of securing money under false pretenses. The complainants were Miss Hemletta Elsenbeig und Miss Minnie Goldsmith of New York, who tcstllfed In court that he fleeced them by fake advertisements According to the testimony, Rosecrans adver tised u full view of the ocean and board walk from his rooms. The girls declared both the ocean and es planade were palmed on the fence In his back yard, and "he had the nerve to point them out to us," declared Miss Eisi'hebtg. The girls produced booklets In which- Rosecrans went Into ruptures over the tennis courts and golf grounds adjacent to the hotel. The Xatlonal Rifle Team, composed ot crack rifle men from Camp Perry, Ohio, which has been in England and France com peting in the International rifle matches started fur America today. The American marksmen who have won great favor during their European visit, will return to Sea Girt. X. J., to take part in the Xatlonal Rifle as sociation matches and the Xew Jersey Rifle association matches.
