Miss Nellie Lerr, 18 years old, walked in her sleep at mid night to a factory where she was em ployed and was bandly injured hand ling a machine at which she worked. The girl was clad only in her night dress. She had been employed in the mill for six years and it Is thought that the constant thought of her work preyed upon her mind. Her hand was almost cut off. Her feet are lacerated from her long walk and she Is now in a hospital, where she Is suffering from a nervous break down. Fred Zelgler, a druggist of Lents, Ore., will arrive here this evening to Join his wife who is visiting here at the home of her uncle, Dr. L. K. Blakeslee. Mr. Zelgler expects to be here for about two weeks. Lee Drake was among the "cow boys" returning from Portland this morning. Berle, professor of Applied Christianity at Tufts college, Cam bridge, drove home the facts he was giving In his lectures on "Education" at the University of Oregon the past two weeks. He explained that colic, If allowed to continue, would develop into chronic dyspepsia, and "baby talk." If not corrected, would become a fixed habit with the child that would be a constant source of pos sible embarrassment In later life. Dr. Berle's principal plea was for more intensive education of children, and to tend that the greatest amount of knowledge might bo acquired dur ing the early, plastic years of a child's life, leaving the lat;r years for ac complishment In the realms of orig inal research. STARVING'' WITH $1130. Woman Fooled Police Samaritans Un til Matron Searched Her. Xew York. Policeman O'Brien found a woman lying almost in a stu por In a doorway on Graham avenue, Williamsburg. "I am starving." said she faintly. "I havo had no food for two days I have no home and no friends." O'Prien sent the woman to the sta tion, where she sank exhausted Into a chair. The reserves sent for a meal which she ate ravenously. Phe said she was Miss Anna Werschof, 35 years old, and had been in this coun try only a few years. She asked to be sent to the almshouse. Before sending her to Manhattan Avenue court the matron searched her. In one stocking was found a bank book showing she had $1400 on deposit In the Bowery Savings bank. What Is all the more remarkable, she has studied only three years, yet can execute with delicate graceful ness all the movements of Pavlowa, even her famous pas a deux, which was Miss Swain's theme at the grad uation exercises. She was walklnk through the pasture. The pet animal crossed her path and she tried to scare it away. The horse expects everyone to romp with it. Maddened by Mrs. Durfor's apparent neglect, the pet turned and kicked her in the face. The glancing blow tore her left cheek bare to the bone. The physician was half an hour stitching It In place. NEAR PANIC AT LUNA PARK. Coney Island Fire Causes Great Ex citement Among Crowds. Coney Island. X. Y. A fire which started in "The Gragoon's Gorge," one of the side shows in Luna" Park, caus ed great excitement among the large crowds of pleasure seekers in the park. The blaze, however, was ex tinguished before any considerable damage had been done. The side show resumed operations after the fire had been put out. HOUSEWIVES AR ECHEATED. How Pittsburg Dealers Robbed Cus tomers in Fruit and Vegetables. Pittsburg Two schemes that deal ers in Pittsburg had been using suc cessfully on the ultimate consumer have been exposed. The unique scheme was the heavy bandaging of the left forefinger. This the dealer would stick into his meas ure and then pour In the fruits or vegetables, the bandaged finger tak ing more space than a false bottom. The finger was used to excite sympa they and this sign of affliction induc ed purchases to make no complaint. The inspectors had received a tip on this scheme and Inquired of the dealer the nature of his injury. . "I cut It badly," he said. The inspectors matle him take off the bandage. The finger was not in ju red. The other scheme was nailing po tatoes to the bottom of a peckmeas ure, Very large potatoes were nailed to the bottom and when the dealer empties his peck of potatoes into a sack or basket he vould manipulate it so that the purchaser could not see the bottom of the measure, nor know he was being cheated. Some carriers have attempted to conform to transit regulations pre viously made by the commission, while others have practically Ignored them, says the commission, thus cre ating a condition of great inequality, in the handling of grain and Its pro duets. The rules laid down for policing of transit privileges on grain and grain products cover the situation exhaust ively and are required to be establish ed by the carriers by August 15 and to be maintained for at least two years. Five times each day one of the biggest and newest municipal ferry boats will make the excursion. DIVING BOYS FIND DEAD MAN. Body of Georjre Beckey Discovered in Molin Swipping Tank. Moline, 111. The body of George Beckey was found on the bottom of the Moline Y. M. C. A. swimminj pool by boys diving. The body was lying In seven feet of water when the boys struck against It. Beckley was mar ried and the father of a 2-week-old chikl. His body apparently had been In the water several hours.
