TEST TAGFE3 CRITOriS TO TlIAIilC BOARD OF TRADE TO FOLLOW AMKKICAN LEAD Will cover VrtcMcttVy Sabe Ground IU1 VnitI States Senate tn poittae Sympathy Kxpmea for Mourners. London, May 3. Lord Mersey, in Mb capacity aa wreck commissioner, and five assessor who will advise him in his questioning on the techni calities of nautical affairs have held the first session of the Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the White Star steamship Titanic. In point of interest to the public, and the importance of its results on thr laws governing the merchantile ma rine, the investigation promises to overshadow all previous tribunals of a similar character. From the 26 questions which the attorney-general announcecd would be taken up. It became ev dent the Inouirv would cover practically the same ground as the investigation by the committee of the American sen ate, but would be conducted more in Good and True Safe and reliable for regula ting the bowels, stimulating the fiver, toning the stomach the world's most famous and most approved family remedy is BEECHAM'S PILLS -11 accordance with the proceed ure of a court of law and deal definitely with stated cases. Eight questions, Sir Rufus Daniel Isaacs said, would delate to happen ings before the disaster; six to warn ings given to the Titanic and the re sulting precautions' .taken, ten to the casualty itself and consequent events; one to the equipment and construction of the vessel, and the .last to the rules of the merchant shipping act. . A 16-foot model of the Titanic, ear ning 16 miniature lifeboats, and a big chart of the North Atlantic were prominently displayed before the in vestigators. In front of the -platform which they occupied were seated 100 members of the bar, representing var ious interests involved, and 100 news paper men. The only reference to the American investigation was Sir Rufus" an nouncement that owing to the deten tion of many witnesses for the sena torial inquiry in the United States the testimony would not be presented in logical order. The seamen who arrived from Xew Tork on the Lapland first were called as witnesses as to the construction and equipment of the Titanic. Lord Mersey recognized Thomas Scanlon. member of Parliament for the North Division of Sllgo, who ap peared for the Seamen's and Fire men's Union, and an attorney for the Merchants' Service Guild and took under consideration the application for representation of the Seafarers Union, the Ship Constructors' As sociation and the Mercantile Officers' Union. An adjournment then was taken. The scene of the hearing was the armory of the Scottish Rifles, which, with its broad drill floor, with two rows of galleries, affords accommo dations for several hundred persons. When the inquiry opened not more than 100 spectators were present and the majority of these were women. Because the accoustlcs proved to be poor Lord Mersey recommended that the Board of Trade provide another Sir Rufus said during the hearing I desire on -behalf of the govern ment to express the deepest sympathy for all those who mourn the loss of relatives and friends among the. pas sengers, the officers and crew of the ill-fated resseU The accident exceed ed in magnitude and In harrowing in-' cldenta any disaster In the history ol the mercantile marine. I cannot for bear paying a tribute to those whose devotion 46 "duty and heroic self-sacrifice maintained the best traditions of the sea." ' Sir Robert Flnlay, chief counsel for the White Star Steamship company, seconded these remarks, repeating that "the disaster had given an op portunity for a display of heroism and devotion to duty which had main tained the best traditions of the mer cantile marine." Dated at Pendleton, Oregon, this 23rd day of April, 1912. THOMAS FITZ GERALD, City Recorder. Hartford, Conn. A great crowd of "fans" overflowed the stands In Elec tric Field in Plalnville to see a ball game between Holyoke and New Brl tain of the Connecticut league. . It was to be the first Sunday contest In the state this season. The teams marched on the field and In response to Insistent demands from the spectators the umpire had declared the game on when the Rev. F. L. Grand of the Plalnville Reform church, who in his sermon denounced Sunday ball and said he would stop the game, appeared on the field. The clergyman, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Marsh advanced t the umpire and told him that Marsh had warrants which would be served on each member of the teams If the game was called. There was much wrang ling. Suddenly the "fans' jumped from their seats and started for the field The clergyman and the sheriff saw them coming and began a hurried de parture. The crowde pursued Marsh and Mr. Grand across the field and through the gate. Marsh dodged out of sight and the mob followed Mr Grand to his door. Breathless, he darted inside and barricaded the door. The deputy sheriff returned to the field and conferred with the players. They decided that as there were no spectators left to see them play It would be foolish to defy the law. The action of the Hartford Central Labor Union In asking for a strict In terpretation of the state blue laws caused Prosecuting Attorney Fred erick Fuller to stop all ball games Ifi East Hartford, where many thousand persons had gathered.' This is said in the Interest of people suffering from chronic constipation, and It is worth; or tneir attention. In the opinion of legions of reliable Am erican people the most stubborn constipation imaginable can be cured by a brief nse of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup I'epaln. You may not have heard of It before, but do not doubt its merits on that account, or because it has not been blatantly advertised. It has old very successfully on word of mouth recommendation, l'arents are giving it to their children today who were given It by their parents, and it has been truthfully said that more druggists use it personally In their families than any other laxative.
