The fact that local packers are go ing out Into the country and are buy ing livestock for loss than they have been paying In the North Portland yards, is having Its effect upon the trade hero. Commission men at -the yardrt complain regarding the situa tion us they way that it narrows the trade hero to such an extent that the business Is being hurt. High priced men are sent out Into the country to pick up the supplies from the ranchers thereby taking that much Ktuff away from the public of fering. Were this stock not obtain able In the country for loss money than here the buyers would not be ent out, according to livestock com mission men. For awhile It was thought that the buying in the country was simply an attempt to take the trade away from the dressed meat market of Front street but now livestock commission handlers ay that packers are using the country purchases as a wedge to hold down the price in the yards. Situation Generally Goxl. Nevertheless there is finite a fair situation for livestock at tho North Portland yards, while a large per cent of tho showing for the day came di rect to a local packing company from its buyers in the country, the stock that came upon a free market was ta ken hold of und prices were continued. Tills was true of the better class of cattlo, but ordinary stock Is showing some neglect, nnd for the range of prices Is not quite so good as former ly. Tho only two loads of cattle that oame forward to the open market at North Portland, sold at 10.75 for the best offerings. There was on'y one load available for the market today and the best of these were quickly picked up by lo cal killers at, 8.30. One small lot sold at $7 25. Hun of hogs for the day was 270 head, compared with 63 head last Fri day and 85 head a year ago. With tho only arrivals in the yards today, a direct shipment to a packing concern, there was no market for mut ton at North Portland today. Gue (a man) as manager of the suffragist head quarters. Following this, women ad herents of Cue's cause seceded and organized a new woman's suffragist party known as the Mary Coggershall Club. The courts (composed of men) will have to decide which faction Is entitled to spend $25,000 left for the cause of suffrage by the late presi dent, Mary Coggsha'l. The only person who didn't say any thing, or who didn't get a chance to say anything, was the man He sat back quietly and let his women lieu tenants handle his case. This Is a comprehensive inquiry, but the most of the Information neces sary (iff an answer Is now in the hands of the war department, where it has been accumulating for the last two years.
