years old, shot and killed' his wife
Martha In the kitchen of their home
at 5617 .South Ashland avenue. He
then walked Into another room and
shot himself.
Mrs. Tanwyk died In un ambulance
while being hurried to St Uernard's
hospital. Tandyk was dead when
neighbors and police rushed Into the
house In response to the screams of
Gertrude and her two brothers John
18 years old, and Joseph, 4 year
old.
The murdered woman had recently
made nn effort to have the police
take Tandyk's revolver away from
him as he had often threatened to
kill her. Her effort was in vain as
he had a permit to carry the weap
on through the fact that he was em
ployed as a special policeman by the
Pennsylvania railroad.
Tandyk abused his wife when he
was drinking and they quarreled fre
quently on that account. He was un
der the Influenco of drink when he
returned home. Mrs. Tandyk, her
daughter Gertrude and two eons,
John, 18 years old. and Joseph, 4
years old, hud Just finished breakfast
nnd the. mother was at the sink wash
ing the dishes.
Tandyk sat In 'the dining room a
few moments nnd appeared In the
kitchen door with the revolver In his
hand.
"I saw the revolver In father's
hand and the thought struck me that
he was going to kill mamma." Ger
trude Tanlyk told the Eaglewood po
lice. "I shouted to mamma to look
out but flic had no chance to escape
She ran toward the door of the bed
room off the kitchen when she saw
father with the gun. but he began

the floor and I saw the blood."

Rochester, X. Y. The effectiveness
of the fire drill saved the lives of
scores of children when fire broke
out in public school No. 3 In Tre
mont street, and In a few minutes en
veloped the entire building In flames.
The school, which cost $10,000, will
be a total loss.
When the fire signal was sounded
the 829 pupils and twenty teachers,
marched out witout panic, with huge
volumes of smoke billowing over their
heads and filling the corridors.
A few minutes later the building
was a mass of flames.

Fresno, Calif. "Yes, that looks
like my picture all right, but I'm not
the man wanted," William Davis a
respected pioneer rancher of Sanger
said as he gazed at the photograph
of his double, "Bill" Davis, wanted
by the Santa Ana authorities on a
charge of grand larceny.
The rancher was arrested on Wed
nesday after the picture of his double
had been received by the authorities
and submitted to the many friends
of the rancher for identification.
As a consequence, William Davis
spent the night In jail without know
ing what he was in ror. He succeed
ed in establishing his Identity and
now threatens to sue for false imprisonment.
