Conditions In the livestock market were quiet today. There was only a single load available ' for the trade and this was quickly snapped up at the prices listed. The weakness In the mutton trade, as reported exclusively by The Jour nal yesterday, was general and this feeling is likely to continue for the next few days. With top lambs worth no more than 15.75 In the North Portland market, and with $6.95 avail able at South Omaha, It la easy to see which way shipments w!U go from competitive territory unless the mar ket here Is willing to pay what oth ers are offering. To date this week there has been a run of perhaps 2825 head In the mut ton trade; this being more than the full requirements of killers at this time. While there has been consid erable Increase In the consumption of mutton In the local market this sea son compared with a year ago, this has been due more to the extremely low values than to anything else. Considering everything mutton has been the cheapest stock available in the moat line for consumers, there fore those that wanted to make their money work on both sides naturally cut out the beef and pork and took to ! me munon. .Mutton Demand IMticrtliig. Now with mutton prices almost normal the demand which formerly took hold owing to the low prices, is deserting and going Into the beef and swine trade. There was a very narrow spread In the wheat trade yesterday opening l-4c lower .for May and l-2c each for July and Septem ber. Closing was l-4c lower for May and September and l-8c for July. Everyone seems to be awaiting more definite news from Argentina. While favorable reports are coming forward at this time and there Is much weakness in the January option at Bunos Ayres, considerable strength U showing for the deferred deliveries. Echo, Ore., Jan. 13 Thursday night a Demorest medal contest was he'.d under the auspices of the W. C. T. U. at the I. O. O. F. hall. A very Interesting program was given. Mu s'c was furnished by an orchestra and a cornet solo was given by Prof. O. A. Cannon. Those participating in the vocal music contest were Misses Daphne Gulliford. Thelma Malcolm, Addie Cates and Vina Houser. In the oratorical contest were Ora Young, j Merrel Dobble, Herbert Coburn and Fee Estab. The contestants acquit ted themselves with marked ability.
