A relic of the wreck of the battleship Maine, the gold class ring of Assistant Engineer Darwin R. Merritt, who lost his life in the explosion of that vessel In Ha vana harbor thirteen years ago, was received at the navy department. Lieutenant Merritt wore the ring when he met his death, and efforts of the army engineers to find it by screening all the debris on the holl er deck were unsuccessful. A Havana newspaper announced it had come into possession of the ring and would turn it over to the United States authorities.
