WnohlnKton, D. C, Aug. 21. Friends of the administration are giv ing unmlstakeahle signs of worry over the possible political effect of the Wllson-Wiley-McCabe feud. Before the Moss Investigating committee took It up it was apparent that the public was overwhelmingly In favor of the doughty doc-tor as against the wily solicitor and with the evidence any thing like even between them Dr. Wi ley would be sustained by public op inion. Little' testimony had been ta ken before the majority of the com mittee was convinced of three facts: first, that If Dr. Wiley was guilty of any Infraction of law in connection with the appointment of Dr. Rusby as pharmacognoclst, there were plenty of precedents for his action, created by Secretary Wilson and Solicitor Mc Cabe; sevond, that If Dr. Wiley had erred he had done so on the side of the people and not on the side of the food-dopers; and third that If ho lost his position there would be a howl from the American people .that $100 REWARD. 3100. In-. cldentally, the testimony showed that for some years Dr. Wiley had been completely shorn of power In connec- I tlon with the administration of the pure food act. The committee was j therefore ready to report exonerating Dr. Wiley a few days after It began Itu 1 .1 . ' ... I r. n I I n . . . I . 1. ' track of too much interesting mate rial. , "Doc" Wiley is a Hoosler . and "buck home" they think a heap' of him. He set Indiana right on pure food before ho left there thirty years ago to work for the government, In diana glories in what is probably the best food law in the country. Cer tain manufacturers, seeking to force on the Hooslers foods their health authorities have condemned, have tried to upset the laws and have It de clared unconstitutional. To assist them the department of agriculture loaned trfese -manufacturers such wit nesses as they desired, Including the members of the famous Remsen board, the department pay'ng the ex penses. The state of Indiana had to furnish its own witnesses and was put to all the expense and trouble possible by the department of agriculture. These facts are percolating through the minds of the Indiana taxpayers and voters and they are getting "all lu-t up," and the longer the rumpus continues the hotter they are getting. At least that is about the sub stance of a letter addressed to the president by an Indiana republican of considerable prominence, who be lieves the Wiley-Wilson-McCabe row 's calculated to result disastrously on Ins party unless speedily and satis factorily settled. News comes from Spencer, Vanburen county, sit uated in a remote part of the Cumber land mountains, of a series of outra ges committed by moonshiners and developments of the past few weeks have proved that in spite of stern ef forts to break up night riding, ku klux marauding in the mountains is still a thing to be dreaded. The outlaws entered his house at 2 o'clock, took Whlttenberg away from his wife and children, and carrying him out in his own yard whipped him almost to death. Only a day or so before this Slato Morris of the same vicinity, who had Blv?n lodging to the officers, was shot from ambush wh'lp plowing in the field. Part of a load of buckshot en tered his body, one striking him in the face. Before arriving at the home of, Whlttenberg the night riders visited his father, Pete Wh'.ttenberg, and threatened him. While they were beating him, Whi.t tenberg recognized the entire band, some of them by their voices, others by their horses. When he had suf ficiently recovered from his terrible experience, Whlttenberg swore out warrants against theeight suspects. When the case was called for trial a few days ago Whlttenberg failed to appear and it ws alleged that he had been threatened by the night rid ers, so the cases were dismissed, but the criminal court, which meets in October, will investigate the matter thoroughly. 1,1 VE STOCK SHOW TO HE ItlG FEATURE OF COUNTY FAIR Walla Walla, Wash.
