Trade In the wheat market locally was quiet during the past 24 hours, but prices were generally maintained. The weakness in foreign markets to day had a quieting effect upon the trade here and there was less inclin ation to buy. Neither were farmers very anxious to sell. There continues a scattered demand for brewing barley from the east, but the movement Is restricted because of the small visible supply at Interior points. Oats trade is steady around $28 a ton for No. 1 white, but there is no outside call. Export flour market is steady to firm with some millers asking an ad vance of 10c a barrel. This places the price at $8. 70, although so far as known no sales have been made above $3.(0 per barrel. Local flour Is quiet at unchanged prices. Hay trade Is firmer but buyers are not inclined to offer any advance even for timothy. The market Is entirely a weather affair at the moment Chicago Follows Europe. Chicago, Jan. 13. Chicago followed the lead of foreign wheat traders to day -when Its traders turned eagerly to the bear side and gave the market a lower closing. There was weakness throughout the world with the possible exception of Argentina and Australia, and the lat ter was only moderately bullish in its views. Liverpool opened l-8d to l-4d lower and closed with a loss of l-8d. Parol was l-2c to 3-4c lower, Ant werp 6-8c and Berlin 6-8c. Budapest closed l-4e higher. This market was dull and slow and after opening S-8c to S-4c lower, clos ed 8-8c to 3-4c under yesterday. Minneapolis reported that the pre mium for cash wheat continues un changed but demand is not so brisk. Millers are complaining about the same flour business passing. A Reliable Coogh Medicine. LKGISIiATCltK MAX NOT CONSIDER VETOES TUESDAY Salem, Ore., Jan. 14. Serious ques tion existing In tho minds of some of tho lawyer members of the legisla- ture as to whether vetoed bills of the last regulnr session can be acted on now after having been Ignored by the special session of 1909. The matter was brought up through the fixing of next Tuesday afternoon as a time for considering Governor Chamberlain's vetoes In the house. The special session, which was call ed by Governor Benson to correct er rors In bills passed at the regular ses sion, was held about one month after the regular session had adjourned. During the Intervening time the bills made a special order for next Tues day were vetoed by the governor. Bus iness at the special session was rush ed through and no matters were tak en up except those unanimously agreed to as emergency matters. Now It Is contended that these ve toes should have been acted upon at tho special session and can not be considered by the now legislature. Lawyers are divided on the question. The fact that a doubt exists concern ing the validity of a measure passed over tho veto under such circumstanc es will tend to strengthen opposition to tho vetoed bills. Some legislators believe the best policy now would be to kill all the vetoed measures, and lot them come in as new bills if there Is any demand for them.
