It haa been conclusively proven that the coyote which some time ago ran amuck n Wallowa county and bit several sheep, a pig and a small boy. was affected with the rabies. At that time Dr. W. H Lytle of this city, state veterinarian, made a trip to Wallowa to Investigate the case but as the coyote had been burned, he was unable to make a direct examination. However, he took the precaution of sending the little boy to Portland, where he could be given the Pasteur treatment, and he also sent the heads of the pig and one of the sheep which had been bitten to the state bacteriol ogist for an examination. The announcement of the findings of that specialist was made in the following story by the Portland Jour nal last evening: Oerma of rabies have been found by Professor Pernot, state bacteriol ogist. In heads of sheep and a pig bitten by a coyote In Wallowa coun ty. The same coyote bit John Bosley, a boy, who Is being given Pasteur treatment by Dr. White and Profes sor Pernot, in order that any tend ency to hydrophobia may be check ed. Professor Pernot's discoveries give foundation to trie numerous reports that rabies or hydrophobia is epi demic among coyotes m eastern Ore gon. With Negri bodies, germs of hydrophobia, Professor Pernot yester day Injected rabbits. One of the rab Itg was dead this morntng. The oth er will be expected to develop rabies In about two weeks, and If it does, will be taken as conclusive proof by Pernot that "mad coyotes" of eastern Oregon are really afflicted with rab ies. The heads of bitten animals were brought to Portland by the state vet erinarian. Dr. W. II. Lytle. Professor Pernot Is anxious that the results of tests which he made up on the heads of bitten animals shall not be the cause of general alarm till the results of the Injections In the raft bits are obtained. ' The parents of the Rosely boy have come to Portland, to be with him un til It la proven whether or not ho will develop rabies from tho coyote's bite. His face Is badly scarred where the coyote bit him. Tlie Inward Effects of hnmora are worse than the outward.
