PLAY GROUNDS.
Portland Finds Public Grounds for
Children Successful,
Portland, Or. Substantial Increas
es in public playgrounds for children
of the city will bo made next year by
the park board. So successful have
been the plans of the city authorities
In this regurd that an extension of
the present system will be adopted.
The playgrounds, under the man
agement of capable directors, have
proved of such value that the board
had no hesitancy In providing more
for next year. Large orders of appa
ratus for these recreation places will
be secured at once so that It will be
Installed early and be ready for use
bv the time schools close next spring
Under the control of the Park
board, a body made up of Mayor SI
mon and public spirited local men
of affairs, tho playground system, re
cently Installed, Is proving a great
success. Children of all ages are af
forded opportunities for recreation
they would otherwise miss and the
Influence fof the pnyground move
ment Is found to be most helpful. In
telligent use of the apparatus is
taught by competent instructors and
competition In sports between differ
cnt play grounds Is aroused. Once
each year a plny festival Is held by
the children, at whfch special games
are played and when city officials at
tend and encourage the children In
their healthful activities.
The playground work has proved a
success in keeping cnuaren on me
streets, for largo numbers of them
would have no other place to play
were It not for the forethought of the
city In establishing these recreation
spots In convenient, downtown loca
tions, within easy access of the schools
and closely populated residence sec
tions. N
In the very, near future Portland
will have public parks and play
grounds fully equipped In all parts of
the city so that none need be wltho"t
the proper facilities for healthful rec
reation so necessary for the growing
child.
