Bill Hayward. physical director of tha Institution has been in Portland for a few days buying football supplies and getting ready for the coming athletic season In general, and while there he spent considerable time with the soccer devotees of the city. Hayward Is aa convinced as ever upon the virtues or intercollegiate football as a standard game, but he has also become convinced that It is adapted only to those who are al ready strong and husky. He wants to Introduce a number of other pas times at Eugene which will take care of the great number of men, to whom the varsity game la not open. He wants something that will make the spectacled and hlgh-browed boys get out and run around in the rain and so become sturdy and rugged. To tkat end Hayward will Intro duce soccer and lacrosse at the state University this fall. Many people have wondered at Hayward's partiality for lacrosse, which he has talked of couple of times. In the old Bays of the lacrosse game when It was much rougher than It Is now and it Is no parlor game now, by any meant Hayward was a member of the crack Capitals of Ottawa, Canada. He play. ed with Vancouver, B. C, In the first lacrosse game ever played In British Columbia. The Portland soccer devotees offer ed Hayward any kind of assistance he might call for, to get the game on its feet in. the first college to ad opt It In the northwest. He was of- fered a team to play his boys in Eu gene, or two teams from tnere for an exhibition there, or a trip for his men and game there, to give his boys to nne points for a few days. No decision as to a course of action has been made yet. Eugene Guard. PASTOR 78, TO WED GIRL 28. Announcement In Chicago Causes Lft tie Surprise to Acquaintances. Chicago ill.
