There wu a firmer tone through
out the livestock market during the
past 24 hours and sales were made
at slightly advanced- values. -
During the period three sales of
teem were made at $6.40, an advance
of 15c over former prices. This was
for California stuff. The scarcity of
cattle throughout the local territory
was the principal contributing cause.
During the morning there were
only scant arrivals and these were
quickly disposed of at top prices for
the various grades. '
A sale nf calves was made this
morning at 17, this being an advance
of 50c over the previous printed fig
ure. Among the Slippers,
-A. L. DeMarls, the prize shipper of
the Walla Walla valley, was in from
Milton today with one mixed load of
cattle and calves and one load of
heep.
Ray A. Dohbs had in a load of hogs
from Washington.
L. E. West was In from Toncolla
with a mlxed'load of hogs and sheep.

Chicago, May 12. Armour gave an
exhibition of short coverings in the
May and July that frightened other
shorts and the closing la the wheat
pit was 1-2 to 1 6-8c a bushel higher
than yesterday.
Damage news was the contributing
cause of today's sharp advance In the
May and July. From Minneapolis
came word that complaints are be
coming more general daily and It Is
hard at this time to confine the news
to any one locality. - Unfavorable con
ditions prevail in the northwest gen
erally. ,
A cable to Morris & Co. from Lon
don stating that the Russia market
was demoralized owing to the heavy
offering and that prices were 4 l-2c
lower, caused some apprehension but
failed to check the advance.
Foreign markets showed a slightly
better feeling. At Liverpool the mar
ket started 6-8 to 6-8d - higher and
closed unchanged to 3-8d above yes
terday.

ACTRESS QUIETED RIOT.

Pullman, Wash. In justice to the
Frisco Lyric company, which was
prevented from giving an entertain
ment here Tuesday night by a riot
of college students, those who took
part in the disturbance announce that
there was no grievance against the
company but the enmity of the stu
dents was aroused by E. E. Reed, a
member of the company, who, the
previous night, pubtlcly announced
that he had attended Washington
State college several years ago and
had always been ashamed of It"
The students were thoroughly aroused
and had they found Reed, who ap
peared on the program as "Smith,"
they would, undoubtedly, have duck
ed him in the creek, as they threat
ened. Only words of commendation were
uttered for the other members of the
company. When the disturbance was
at Its height and the opera house was
surrounded by a howling mob, the
leading lady went out and talked to
the boys and young men, asking:
What have we done that you should
treat us this way?" A number re
plied: "We have nothing against
you or any member of the company,
except Smith." When It was learned
that "Smith" had disappeared the
crowd asked to have the show given
and offered to maintain perfect or
der, but the company was so nervous,
one woman member being almost on
the point of hysterics, that it was de
cided to make no attempt to give a
performance. Several members of the
company told the boys who were
searching among the flies and wings
of- the stage for "Smith" that they
hoped the boys would catch him and
give him a lesson. "He has been too
smart and has caused us trouble on
several occasions," said one of the
members of the company.
Marshal Baymiller was not seen
during the evening. It was general
ly known In the afternoon that stu
dents planned to create a disturbance
at the show last night and many went
for the sole purpose of witnessing the
acts of the students, but the marshal
was not there. The marshal is on
duty only during' the night. .

several fine photographs of the wan
derer, besides a number of spectro
grams through the lower part of the
spectrum. These showed the presence
of what Is thought to be actylene,
the gas often used for purposes of
illumination. The tall, It Is observed,
H changing in form, and more than
one streamer Is now visible. - The
spectrograms Indicated also an In
tense lnneractivlty. If the theories of
astronomers are correct that a com
et's tall Is formed by countless mil
lions of meteorites split from Its head
by forces from the sun. It Is prob
able that Halley's comet will gradu
ally become less and less distinct as
time goes on, and that In the course
of 60 or 75 centuries It will become
extinct, so persons who are planning
the comet parties described above
should make early engagements and
get busy within the. next few days. The
sun rose today at 4:45 a. m., and the
comet two hours and twenty min
utes earlier. The comet will be visible
tomorrow morning about 2:30 a. m.
in the east, near the planet Venus. Its
distance from the earth Is now about
41,000,000 miles.
