"Every furmor in Umatilla county
and especially every member of the
farmers' union, should make It a point
to be In Pendleton or some other one
of the towns in the county on the oc
casion of the visit of the Farmers'
Demonstration train next week," said
Charles Hill, secretary of the county
and slate organizer for the national
union, this morning. "The alms of
thisitraln are exactly in accord with
the purposes and alms of the Farmers'
Educational and Co-Operative Union
and every farmer should take advan
tage of this rare opportunity. I ex
pect ,to accompany the train on its
tour through a part of eastern Oregon
and will get all the good out of It that
I possibly can."

to 10:45 a. m.; at Athena from 12:30
to 2 p. m.; Adams 2:10 to 3:30 p. m.;

Electric Lighted Train.
Electric lighting of the entire train
Is now planned by the officers of the
read. This feature will be added not
only to give better light on the ex
hibits in the baggage-cars, but as a
demonstration of what can be accom
plished with small gasoline engines In
running farm machinery and furnish
ing lights cheaply for houses, barns
and other buildings.
Free distribution of seeds Is also
' plunned. arrangements for the supply
having been made yesterday, and as
Btlll another feature of the train It Is
announced that the dairy exhibit will
bo equipped with a milking machine,
the operation of which will be shown
In the milking of the two dairy cows
that will be carried on the train.
SlMico Not to Bo Sold.
The O. R. & X. officers, since the
announcement concerning the train
tin. mnria. have been besieged by im
plement and machinery dealers who
are willing to pay high prices ror ex
hibit space on the train. The com
pany, however, has decided to elimi
nate all space advertising, and par
ticular makes of machines or imple
mnt trill not bo recommended. Most
of the farm machinery utilised will
be supplied by the Oregon Agricul
tural College and although the ma
chinery will carry the names of the
makers, this is unavoidable. All of
fers for advertising space have been
refused.
Distribution of seed will be made
among specially selected farmers. It
would be impossible for the train to
carry seed for distribution to every
farmer who will attend the demonstra
tion, and the desire Is to ,iace it In
the hands of men who It Is known
will make an effort to utilise the seed
In the manner recommended by the
Agricultural College experts accom
panying the train. With thli end In
view the commercial and farmers' or
ganizations In the communities to be
visited are to be asked to recom
mend men who will give the seeds
the best test possible.
Seed Tohm Desired.
The seeds distributed will Include
" Canadian field peas, Minnesota corn
and Montana alfalfa. The corn will
be distributed at each station along
the route. The peas will be given
out In the grain growing districts
where peas are commended for ro
tation with wheat as forage crops and
"for returning vital elements to the
soil. Tho alfalfa seed will be dls-
tributed where the soil and climate
are deemed adaptable, but will not
bo given out where the alfalfa Is now
grown successfully. -,A dry-fnrmed
alfalfa Is recommended strongly In
some districts where no attempt Is
now made to grow It and the effo-t
will be to Introduce an acclimated
seed into such localities. The other
seeds have been selected with the Idea
of securing what will grow success
fully In the communities to be visited.

In Tualatin valley east of the big hill,
says the "Portland Journal.
Plans for this project have so far
progressed that the promoters have
procured options on practically two
thirds of the Tualatin valley contig
uous to the eastern foot of Council
Crest, and In part along the eastern
slope of the hill. The route for the
tunnel has also been determined up
on, and permission gained to construct
the bore according to this route.
It Is Intended to make this tunnel of
sufficient size to permit an automo
bile or carriage driveway on either
side of the car track, which Is to be
laid In the middle. The tunnel will be
a little over a mile In length, and will
give a means of maintaining a 7-min-ute
car service between the down
town district of the city and the heart
of the Tualatin valley, thus opening'
that district as one of the nost de
sirable and beautiful residence sec
tions of the city.
The plans of the capitalists back of
the project are now in course of or
ganization, and It is expected that the
first steps oward actual construction
will begin before the summer Is over.

undeniable demand for his resigna

deceived his ministers and had be

The greater part of this fortune, he
said, was profit from tho late king's

with annexation.
M. Jensen, a liberal, asserted that
many millions had disappeared from
the Congo treasury, and amid a scene
of excitement demanded to know
what money had maintained the ex
travagance of the Baroness Vaughn's
establishment at Balincourt.
The minister of the colonies rose to

questions admitted that he had been
deceived In certain respects on the
Congo fund. This admission brought
cries of "Resign!" "Resign!" from
members of tho chamber and to re

to go over.

The dedication of the new Chris
tian church yesterday was a decided
success in every way. The building
was crowded with people who began
to arrive as early as 9 o'clock. The
Sunday school session was largely at
tended, and at the close of the session
an Invitation was given and twenty
people came forward to confess their
belief In Jesus the Son of God.
The dedicatory 'sermon was deliv
ered by Charles Reign Scoviile of Chi
cago. He held the audience In his
power for about an hour, then made
the call for funds to meet the amount
required to finish the building. The
people responded very liberally and
cheerfully and within a short time ten
thousand dollars was subscribed.
Praise Service,
A praise service was held in the
afternoon. In which all the local prot
estant churches joined. There were
short speeches of congratulation from
Dr. Bleakney of the Presbyterian
church, Dr. Evans of the M. E.
church. Rev. Storle of the Baptist
church. Rev. Mcldrum, former pastor,
and Rev. Calllson of Helix. The af
ternoon meeting closed with a union
communion service.
In the evening the building was
again crowded and every seat was ta
ken. Another effort was made to se
cure funds, and two thousand dollars
more was secured.
The sermon was an able one. in
which Dr. Scoviile said in part:
"When John the Baptist came and
said, 'I nm going to make the crooked
paths straight.' he went on to do It.
Not to bring down hills like these,
but hills of iniquity."
The doctor then went on to speak
of the common sins of the people and
In referring to the saloons and the
young men w" o frequent them, said:
"Tho young girl who hangs on to a
Jug haiftlle and later calls that thing
her husband, the wife who has a jug
handle for a husband and the mother
who encourages her daughter to mar
r)' such things are very unfortunate.
The young girls should not be shoved
off and encouraged to marry such
things.
"The boy should be js pure as the
girl. Tou cannot buy virtue and char
acter. I expect to live long enough
to see every state in the union dry,
and the beautiful stars and stripes
will float over the United States with
out floating over the saloon."
Speaking of gambling, card parties,
etc, he said: "Tou never can save the
boys until the women of this country
stop gambling for cream pitchers, etc.
They all play the Bame games, use the
same cards and at the same hours.
The only difference is that the boy
plays It In the back room of a saloon
and his mother plays It in the fash
ionable home at card parties."
At the close of this sermon another
Invitation was given and seven made
the start for Jesus.

NAKED EYE MAY SEE
COMET ON APRDIi 8
San Jose, Cal. Halley's comet will
be visible to the naked eye, Just be
fore dawn on April 8. or shortly af
ter that date, states W. W. Sampbell,
director of Lick Observatory, on
Mount Hamilton.
"While it is never possible to pre
dict how bright a comet is going to
be." he said recently, "it is safe to say
that the head and perhaps a little of
the tail of the comet will be visible
at this time.
"On May 18 the comet will pass be
tween the earth and the sun at a dis
tance of 14,000,000 miles from the
earth. On this day the earth may
pass through the tail of the comet, but,
there is no danger for terrestrial life
as at this distance from the head the
tail of the comet will be extremely at
tenuated The passage of the comet
between the sun and earth cannot be
observed to advantage from Califor
nia, because the sun will be close to
the horizon, and observations will
have to be made through a great ex
tent of terrestrial atmosphere. Ob
