In the fell clutch of circum stance I have not winced nor cried aloud; Under the bludgeons of chance My head is bloody, but un bow'd. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade. And yet the inesxice of the years Finds and shall find me un afraid. It matters not how straight the gate, How charged with punish ments the scroll, I am the master of my fate; I nm the captain of my soul. W. R. Henley. 4444 -- 44444444 rii i MONEY Tltl'ST. During the tilt In the United States senate last summer Senator Dolllver made a very caustic remark about a lamp post. Ho intimated that something of that sort might be brought Into use in the event tne centralization of wealth should pro ceed to such an extent that one man finally became master of the finan cial and industrial life of the country. At the time Senator Dolliver made his retort It was regarded by most people as a bit of sharp repartee. Thev did not consider the country In any Immediate danger of one man rule. Yet only a few months have elapsed since that time and already a monev trust is announced. "So close have become the alliance and amalgamations of leading fin ancial interests in Wall street during the last three raonths that almost the absolute control of the country's fi nancial affairs is now centralized In the hands of a few men who are acting in concert." says a story from New York. "A money trust has come Into existence, with J. P. Morgan at Its head, the most gigantic combina tion of capital in the world. "There is no concrete definite or ganization to this latest trust; no le gal incorporation, no elected directors, no list of stockholders. To use the descriptive phrase of the financial world, it Is simply a 'community of Interest'." Continuing the story tells of some of the things this great capitalistic combination might do. It could call two hundred million dollars of loans over night and ruin any adversary. It could ruin credits and cause a money stringency any time: It could deplete the bank reserves of New ' York, raise the rate of interest, crip ple the operations of the government, dictate the policy of the railway com panies and the expansion of other In dustrial concerns. Truly it Is a wonderful power that Is wielded by this money trust and by J. P. Morgan, its head. It Is a power that may be used for good as well as for evil purposes. How will It be used, will this great trust work fcr the development and betterment of all the country and all the people or will the financiers work for them selves and Wall street alone. If J. P. Morgan Is a great statesman and patriot .as well as the king of finan ciers all will be well. If he is not there is danger that Senator Dolllver's lamp post will be needed. THE KCNAWAY TRAIN. Xt mariner fear a derelict bo do railway men dread a runaway train. . A wild train, auch as the one that broke loose at Kamela yesterday knows no block signals and It cannot be reached by wire. When a wild train starts down a mountain grade It acts hearts a'thumplng for no one can foretell where It will stop and what mischief It will do. But fortu nately the Kamela runaway (ltd not go far and when It went Into the ditch the few men on board escaped without harm. It was n very fortu nate runaway after all compared with what It ml Rht have been. The O. R. & N. company and Its employes are to be congratulated. WALLA WALLA "WET." Walla Walla voted "wet" by a heavv majority. This fact is dis couraging to the people of I'mntllla j county for the question of prohibition ; In this county, ould be far simpler ' than at present with Walla Walla also In the "dry" column. The vietorv of the divekeepers In the Garden City will also be displeas ing to a large element of very goo.? people now residing In Walla Walla. There are hundreds of retired farm ers living in that city. Many of them made their money in 'this county and then went to Walla Walla to live. When Walla Walla went "wet" the wishes of these people wre disre garded. Now that Walla Walla has decided to keep Its dives the course for these retired farmers to ' pursue should be plain. If they want to live where they will be free from the influences ot saloons let them come here to re- kle. Let others who are preparing to retire and move to town do llke- wise. Pendleton is "dry" largely as the result of votes cast by the farm- ers. Therefore the conditions here j should be ideal for those people. Then Pendleton has other mauce nnta osiilo from the fact that it is . . . a clean town morally. This city has a school system second to no other J small city in the northwest. Aside from the public schools and high school it has two excellent academies and a business college. Pendleton j has mercantile establishments that surpass those of Walla Walla, at least ' in proportion to the size of the place. ! There is all kinds ot suburban prop erty that may be had at reasonable j figures. A traction system is soon ; to V.P estnblished and this will add I greatly to the value of local realty". Altogether Pendleton has a host ot inducements to offer those who are looking for an acceptable town in i which to live. If the retired farmers ' now livinc in Walla Walla want improve their surroundings let them c.ime here to live. Pendleton always has a warm welcome for new people and especially for good people. Come here, Pendleton is "dry." The East Oregonian is Informed that President Penrose of Whitman college has been in the east for a year and so was not present during the prohibition fight in Walla Walla and could make no speeches. It is unfortunate that he was away. Evi dently some others were also else where at the time, judging from the result of the voting. The Hermiston Herald has passed into the hands of a new owner. I The "Fraud Queen" has been brought back to Pendleton after sev eral years absence. Hail to the queen. But it seems she belongs at Salem. It is a cold day when there Is not something doing out in the Huldman country. That cougar story is not the only one those people tell.
