It is ulso apparent that the system as it Is now being constructed is but a nucleus of a greater system, and that if the Yakima country con tinues to grow and prosper it" will reach out to other districts and neigh, borhoods." Undoubtedly the traction system of Xorth Yakima will result in keeping that city the big commercial center of central Washington. Some day Xorth Yakima should be In a class with the big coast cities of Washing ton and with Spokane. Pendleton too will become a real city if provided with the right sort of traction facilities. "Men have a right to assemble and to suggest candidates for office in the name of any political party no mat ter what fanatics may say to the con trary," yells the Portland Oregonian. Ah, but the assembly plan fathered by the Oregonian and some Portland politicians does not look to the hold ing of casual gatherings for the pur pose of recommending men for nomi nations. The idea is to restore the convention system though under a different name. What the assembly promoters desire is to make assembly "recommendations" equivalent to nominations. To this end all aspir ants for nominations are being urged to go before the assembly for support. Those who do so will be under obli gations, moral at least, to -uphold the assembly selections. Those who fail to do feo but instead continue in the race after the assembly has adopted its slate will be treated as bolters. They will be knifed and vilified Just as were the men of old who failed to line up when the party whip was cracked. There is nothing to it. The assem bly plan looks to the undoing of the direct primary law and to the restor ation of bossism. Those back of the assembly scheme do not like direct nominations. Under the direct pri mary law the politicians cannot run things. Party bosses and workers have no power and they resent their down fall. In order to get back into power they make the claim that the direct primary law as now observed is un safe. They hold that the intelligence of all the people is not equal to the intelligence of a few politicians. The clique that is back of the assembly say to the republicans of Oregon, "You have but little sense, let us do your thinking for you." How' can they expect to win on such a Issue? PEXDLETOX TOO. According to the news dispatches Representatives Englebright and Kahn of California made arguments Satur day before the navy department against the practice of the depart ment in hiring foreign ships to bring coal to the Pacific coast. It was stated the matter would come before the naval committee today and that Mr. Englebright would try to have the government employ American vessels Instead of foreign vessels. that "pay sailors starvation wages." This is evidently the scheme against which local farmers were warned re cently and against which they protest ed. It is a scheme to eliminate com petition in the shipping business. These coal ships return laden with wheat. If the grain companies are correct it will mean an advance of a dollar per ton in the exporting rate on wheat, if they are ruled-but. This will mean three cents per bushel less fi.r the wheat yield of the northwest. The California congressmen are evi dently serving in the Interests of the shipping concerns which wants to have their foreign" competitors barred from the field. Congressman Ellis and others from the northwest should be able to block this proposition. They will be remiss in their duty if they do not exert themselves to the utmost to prevent such an injustice from being worked upon the wheatralsers of the northwest. The plea that is made for the Am erican sailors and the reference to the starvation wages paid the foreign sailors is all bosh. Such men as Kahn and Englebright are looking out for the millionaire shipowners not for the men who man the ships. cotnrolled for an Indefinite period without variation. London has a new club which is al most entirely run by electricity, even the waiters being electrical. Searchlights have become a factor In labor troubles. They are used to illuminate the grounds about factory property. The General Eectric company has greatly enlarged Its plant at Lynn, Mass, A steam turbine electric locomotive is being tried out In England. Austria g to develop 60,000 elec trical horse-power from the river Gaska, which will be used for light ing and industrial purposes. An oil tempering bath heated by electricity has been produced by the General Electric company. It is planned to extend the New York Central electrification to North White Plains. The city council of Cincinnati is planning a subway to connect the bus iness section of the city with the out lying residential sections. Mueiios Ayres has authorized the construction of an electric subway under the city. APPEAL TO SHOPPERS. Springfield Republican: We have spoken of the desirability and hu manity of the early buying of Christ inas presents, and let us add the con cise, pointed and wholly admirable appeal of the consumers' league, as follows: 1. Buy eariy In the season and early In the day. 2. Send packages two weeks ahead marked, "Not to be opened until Christmas." 3. Minister to actual needs, chiefly to children. 4. Choose presents having usefulness or beauty. 5. Demand articles which been made and sold under eonditions fair and wholesome to the worker. 6. Remember that Christmas is of noble memory, not an occasion for display. Give either have KOURTEEX ERRORS OF LIFE. In the agitation against football It h a matter of note that the college presidents most vigorous in denounc ing the strenuous sport are those who head institutions that either do not play the game or else are not in the "big team" class. The president of McMinnville college utterly abhors the game while Xewberg. Philomath, LeFayette and other schools of that class are also fernlnst the sport. Why? The Pendleton Auto company has annexed Walla Walla to its field. Wal ter McCormmach is an agressive bus iness man. With his big business in this city and his branch house in Walla Walla he will soon be the auto king of the inland empire. The fight against tuberculosis Is a fight in behalf of humanity. People should be glad to assist in driving out the dread disease by purchasing the red cross stamps. If Pendleton is provided with a trac tion system with interurban connec tions a host of blessings will follow the improvemi'ii: . At North Yakima a traction system was but recently Installed1 and It is meeting with the greatest appreci ation. "As time goes on the people of North Yakima and vicinity will prob atly have a better appreciation of the magnificent work that was done by the local men who started the elec tric railway project here and finally Induced outside capital to take hold of It, says the Republic. The Yakima Transportation company is now, with in a few months after the sale to the present owners, one of our largest three or four local business Institu tions. Probably the Cascade people have more money Invested, but much of their property lies outside the county. We do not think of any other local business enterprise which rivals It for magnitude. "Nearly half a million dollars has been expended already by this com pany for extensions and equipment Over 40 miles of road are in process of construction.
