Portland, April 30. Flour which the Pacific coast nv'Ilera were over anxious to sell to the orient early In the season at prices that did not In many Instances ray for the cost of wheat and grinding, much less a profit to tho miller, Is actually being brought back by American flour mou and wMl soon Cross the Pacific by steamer and then go by rail to the east. This flour will net the oriental buyer-seller Just obout 3 1.50 a barrel and as he does not have the trade foi such a high-priced arlcle Is quite will ing to let go and allow his native friends to again eat rice for a while. This Is the first time In the history of oriental flour shipments that flour sold to the orient has been re sold to American buyers and then re sold again to eastern parties, each rarty concerned In the transaction se curing handsome profits. Hogs and Cattle . I'lrm. A very strong tone remains In oth er lines of livestock except sheep, and prices are generally maintained at the top. For cattle the demand con tinues brisk, with only a small show ing of arrivals for the past 24 hours. Top steers have been sold at $5.65 but no h'gher, although some Inter ests are still of the opinion that this price can be stretched a fraction If the proper quality was shown. How ever, the sales at $5.65 were for first class stock. Potato Market Strong. The publication by tho Journal yes terday of the available supplies ot potatoes and where they were held added considerable strength to the local potato sltuat'on, and for best stock most commission handlers are today firmly holding over for $2. The market in the south Is Improved ana Cc has been added to the price. New potatoes, while In somewhat better supply from California, are not in very much request and the price has dropped about c under former shipments In this direction. Today's market on new spuds ranges between Cc and 4 He. Market Summary. Wool 1909 Willamette valley, 17 21c; eastern Oregon, 17!f22c. Tallow Prime, per lb., 3 4c; No. 2 and grease, 2? 2 hie. Wheat products have ncreased in price from 300 to 400 per cent since September 25, 1905, according to figures quoted today by a local Ti!ilcr. He declares that even with the present prices the millers could jYiake more money by shutting down their mills and selling the wheat they now have on hnnd by grinding It into flour and selllnr though they have In contemplation no such move, as they desire to hold heir customers which they have secured. Millers are now running on wheat bought when the price was down. One local flour-maker explained the present cost of flour today to a Bulle tin reporter. He said that a straight grade of flour made from bluestem wheat at $1.25 a bushel could be sold at wholesale at $5.50 a barrel, but a patent flour made from bluestem whet at $1.25 a bushel should bring $6.80 a barrel at wholesale. Tho higher co;t of the patent flour. he says, Is caused by the low price of the clear flour, which Is 50 per cent of straight grade and is sold for Oriental and California bakers' trade. With the average bluestem wheat testing 55 to 56 bushels, It takes about four and two-thirds bushels to make a barrel of flour, half of wheat Is patetnt flour and half clear f'."ur. Figuring on paying $1.26 e. bushel for blue stem and selling flour at $6 a barrel, the miller declares It would be monej In .his pocket to sell tne wheat in stead of the flour. Communicate With Mars. SOLD AND GUARANTEED BY PRESIDENT TAFT WITHDRAWS POWER SITES Washington. When President Taft's attention was called to an ar ticle in the May McClure's by Jud son C. WelHver on "The National Waterpower Trust," he immediately announced through the secretary ot the Interior that he would withdraw later all waterpower sites not now within national forests. When Secretary Ballinger issued the notice last Monday of the restora tion of several million acres of land which Roosevelt had withdrawn, con servation advocates were thrown into consternation, fearing the new ad ministration wouldn't uphold conser vation. He announced that he had In structed the director of the geological survey to survey all such lands with a view of segregating them and that congress would be asked to enact such laws as wo'tlu prevent the trusts from absorbing power sites. Conservationists rejoice greatly over these developments. They be lieve the conservation movement will be thereby rescued from what they feared was complete frustration. lillllousncss and Constipation.
