The craze, and it may be Justly called a craze, started with the an nouncement of the coming of Maude Allen from England to America to dance her Salome dance made famous by the approval of King Edward and loyalty. Miss Gertrude Hoffman, an American actress, anticipated Miss Allen's coming and early in the sum mer offered at Hammerstelns Victoria theater her "Vision of Salome." Her efforts were rewarded with crowded houses. Then Miss Eva Tanguay produced, at the Alhambra, a dance called "The Remorse of Salome," and caught the town. Then Miss Lotta Faust, at the Casino, danced herself Into prominence and reaped her pre decessors' rewards. Criticism ran high as to who was the most effective. It was a common thing to hear men and women on the street rars, In the hotels and at the tneaters discussing the merits and de merits of his or her favorite Salome dance. Havye today by William Uarend. William Thomas, 19, who Is employed by Uarend, was the witness. When Thomas was called to the stand, the Justice asked: "Do you know what the oath means?" "No," was the reply. "Do you know there Is a God?" "Nope, but I heard something about there being a hell " "Ever hear of heaven?" "Nope." "Were you ever nt Sunday school?" The announcement that the Holy City Is to play at the Oregon theater on the night of Saturday, should nave a double drawing power. Rivalry be. tween Milton and Freewater, Oregon, as to which place will have the best exhibit at the Walla Walla county fair, to open Monday morning, Is becom ing very marked and promises to i each a stake of bitterness. Milton and Freewater are the rival fruit growing sections of Umatilla county. The two places are located within a stone's throw of each other, but they always have been divided in spirit and sentiment, and there Is a great rivalry between the two places. The present fight started when Mil ton reserved a large space for exhi billon purposes at the fair grounds. Ireewater immediately came In for a large space In a more prominent position and then Milton canged her space. At present both places have about the same amount of space In prominent positions, and the rivalry wm now be confined to the nature of the exhibits.
