Walter Pierce reports that the poles for the power line to connect the Grande Ronde electric system with the Haker line, have been set for one-half the distance out from Oilon. says the I .a Grande Star. At present rate of progress nil the pole will be In by the end of next week and It Is the expectation of the com pany to have the wire strung about lie week later. In fact. Mr. rierce ! lleves that they will have every thing In readiness to connect up by the first of November. This connec- tion will give the Grande Rondo com-1 pany an additional 3000 horse-power: If that amount Is needed. There Is a! force of about TiO men employed on ! the work. I Work on the survey of a line to con nect the North Hank and Great North ern roads by way of the Columbia river has been begun by a party of Hill engineers, and the line will not only head off a projected Milwaukee branch through Douglas county, Wash., but will bring the vast wheat crop of Douglas and Henton counties down the water grade to Portland, says the Portland Journal. The route of the proposed line be gins at Kennewlck, on ttie North Hank main line between Spokane and Portland, follows the west bank of the Columbia to Priest Ilaplds, where It crosses the river and follows the east bank of the Columbia to Trinidad on the transcontinental line of the Great Northern. At Trinidad the proposed line will connect with a route already surveyed by Great Northern engineers to connect Trinidad with Waterville, by way of Moses coulee. j Kcxrt Substantiate!. The Waterville line was surveyed a dozen years ago, but was given up without commenting construction work. It has recently been surveyed however, and the beginning of the new Kennewick-Trinldad line survey lends color to the report that the en-! tire lln will be built at once. Th- construction of the line would he of especial importance to I'nrtlanu, because It would divert all the wheat of central Washington which the Mil-' v.aukee road has been preparing to rapture f"r I'uget sound, to Portland, down the Columbia river grade. The new Columbia river line would give Hill a down haul from Waterville, In northern Douglas county, to the sea, making It practically Impossible for roads running to the sound to com-' pete with him In, the hauling of ' wheat. Freight rates on wheat are so low that the expense of hauling up J grade across the Cascade divide would prove too much for the Milwaukee. l l'mlrr X'ortli and South. j Ijist summer a survey was run by the Great Northern from Adrian, In Douglas county, paralleling the Mil waukee line to Othello and running due south from there to Pasco.
