TIIK CAT ,M THE 1'IDDLE" NEXT DIG ATTH-ACTION. "The Cat and the FidJle," the merry musical extravasxinza of tho present season, will be presi-nt-ed at the new Oregon theater Frid.iy, Oc tober 9. As the title Indicates, the play tells of the wonderful doings of the peo ple cf another world In connection with some of those of our own flesh flesh and blood. The motif of the tory is this: In a far-away island the Island of Eye, the great Eye rules over the destinies of the peo ple. The nominal kinjr. Great Gobs, and his consort. Queen Circe, are the rulers so long as the Eye Is kept open, but every 100 years a sacrifice, in the guise of a young girl with a strawberry mark on her left arm, has to be offered ns a token for the continuance of the reign of the Eye. Unless the sacrifice Is offered, the Eye closes and Great Gobs and Queen Circe loose their rower and the Ge nii, with the Cat and the Fiddle, who have been Imprisoned In a jar in .the bowels of the Catskill mountains for 600 years, are restored to the throne. The play opens with Great Gobs and Circe finding the girl Polly, In the vicinity of Kokomo, Ind. While Polly, her lover (Wilfred) and their friends are on a cruise the ship drifts towards the Island of Eye. The wish ing ray from the eye beams on the ship the villain wishes the vessel to sink end all are washed ashore, or rather into the sea. The second acx opens with every one saved and on the Isle of Eye. Great Gobs and Circe relentlessly keep up their search for Polly, but are foiled by her friends. In the meantime, Happy, a tramp, finds the Jar of the Genii, breaks it open and releases the Genii and the Cat and the Fiddle; whereupon the Genii be comes his slave forever and any wish Happy may ask is granted, providing the Cat and the Fiddle are present. The last act finds Polly in the pow er of 3reat Gobs, who is to offer her as a sacrifice to the Eye, which Is al most closed. He is about to triumph notwithstanding the efforts of her friends to release her, when the Cat Rrid the Fiddle, Happy and the Genii appear on the scene. The Eye closes forever, Gobs and Circe are dethron ed, and the Genii and the Cat and the Fiddle come Into power again. Happy wishes that he, Polly Wilfred,! Mike. H.ms and the rest or the mor tals be transported back to America, whereupon they all sail skyward, homeward bound, leaving the Cat and the Fiddle and the beautiful Genii in full power as absolute rulers of the Island of Eye. Congressman Longworth, son-in-law of President Roosevelt, that Taft! should be kept eight years in the White house and then Roosevelt; should be elected in 1916, to remain president two terms, supplied the sen-I satlon for today. His speech at Ster-: ling. 111., has caused Longworth to be dubbed generally by politicians "the Furchard of the Taft campaign."! Opinions naturally have varied as' to the significance of the statement;! Pome say Xlck has let out a state se-' cret which will enrage many repub lican politicians and cause the aliena tion of a large support, and that he has merely let the cat out of the bag. John E. Lamb, in Charge of Demo cratic headquarters, said: "There is evidence that Longworth has let slip an Intimation of plans actually laid. It explains the presi dent's anxiety to get Taft nominated, and the present fight he is making, by using the machinery of the feder al government, to force his election. The president is talked off for United States senator from Xew Tork. If chosen his term would end almost ex actly In eight years. Such an out come would give Roosevelt and Taft between them practically 24 years, or a quarter of a century, in control of the government. IfT. I .. . La ter it developed that the president had used that threat to force Taft's nomi nation, really meaning It, serving no tice on certain opponents of Taft to that effect. The most noliceable feature of the discussion Is that Taft's partisans re sent Longuorth's utterance, as tielng them up too closely with Roosevelt. In connection with the preparation of a report for the conservation com mission recently appointed by the president, the United States geologl cal survey has undertaken to make a complete census of the water powers of the country, including data as to the amount of power that Is now de veloped on the various streams and the prominent streams and the amount available for future utiliza tion. A somewhat similar work was un dertaken In 1SS0 in connection with the tenth census of the United States as a result of which two volumes on the subject, one relating to streams east of the Mississippi nnd the other to western streams were published. Since the preparation of that report an Immense amount of formation In regard to surface water resources in various parts of tho country has beeri collected by the United States geologi cal survey, and this Information, em bldied In the survey records, serves as a basis for the present census. The work of preparing the census is divided among nine hydrographie districts, each under the charge of a district engineer, who, with a corps of trained assistants, devotes his en tire time to studying the conditions affecting stream flow In the group of states assigned to him. One man killed, two fatally Injured, and a score burn ed seriously when a ladle containing tons of molten metal was overturned in the shops of the Grand Trunk rall load Saturday.
