Wilmington, Del., Sept.' 22. With tin- beginning of the hearing here to- diiy before William G. Mahaffey, spe cial referee, the government fired Its anti-trust bombardment of the so culled powder combine. The suit promises to develop highly sensatlon- al evidence and will probably be one of the most Important that the gov ernment has yet brought against a corporation. The defendants are the H. I. du 1'ont do Nemours company f tills state and about 50 other powder concern alleged to be more or less controlled by the Delaware corporation. Able attorneys have been retained by the defendant com panies anr the suit will be hard fought. The capitalization of the powder concerns named In the government's suit is In excess of If.O.OMO.OOO. The line principals are Involved as In the government's cult against the Standard Oil company of New Jersey now In progress. The suit seeks to retrain the 20 or more powder com panies controlled by the E. I. Pu l'ont de Nemours company of Dela ware from doing iniines under an agiecmcnt. The suit Is brought un der the Sherman anti-trust law, and Hie gnvei nment makes the allegations that the powder companies are oper ating in restraint of trnde. The government's complaint Is that an i -spoliation composed or practi cally all th' manufacturers of gun powder an. I other high explosives In the United States w;is formed In 1ST2, the object being the elimination of all competition between the members of the association. The only com panies which did not enter the agree ment were the California Powder Woiks. the Sycamore Manufacturing company and the Lake Superior Powder company; but, according to the government's complaint, these three companies afterward became parties to what Is termed "the com bination and conspiracy in restraint of trade and commerce." The association became known as the Gunpowder Trade association of tne United States. The government alleges that the association entered into a "fundamental agreement" that Til competition should be suppressed. There was a later agreement. It Is charged, known as the "President's Agreement." In furtherance of the "combination and conspiracy for the I express purpose or eliminating com- petition between the various parties: to the agreement." Thousands and thou sands of dollars have gone up In smoke. In the last three days, and the city of Dillulli alone has raised $35. 000 to relieve the want and depriva tion of the range towns. The exten sive forests on the shores of Isle Roy ale, in Lake Superior, have been com pletely wiped out. This Island, t hough close to the Canadian boun dary line, Is a part of the United Stales. It Is rich in deposits of cop per, and so far removed Is It from the usual routes of travel that It Is practically without a permanent pop ulation. Its many harbors are almost untouched by commerce, and only the temporary homes of sportsmen and hunters rise nmld the wilderness of spruce and fir.
