In the flgnt Just ended In Delaware county over tho election of a representative In the state legislature to serve dur ing tho special session that opens to day, was waged the bitterest struggle this state has ever known between the forces that stand for progress In deal lug with the liquor question and those that are seeking to break down the present remonstrance law and substi tute tno brewers' plan of local option by wards and townships. Tho activity of the liquor interests, backed by the powerful finances and Influence of the brewery combine, gave this contest a different aspect from all former legislative campaigns n this county and differentiated It, In fact, from all political contests of whatever character that have taken lace since the county was organized. Ordinarily a fight for the election of members of the legislature In Dela ware county would attract very little Mention outside of the county. Tho normal republican plurality Is about 1'iOD. President Roosevelt carried be county by 5100. Marlon county fteii gives larger republican plural ities than Delaniare, but there is an Id nnd time-tested saying that for . general batting average there Is no nore reliable republican county In be state than Delaware. The brewers are not blind to tho iast political preferences of Delaware outity, but they stake their faith to he proposition that while the county s republican It la .also "liberal," or, c speak more explicitly, the city of M uncle, with its 101 saloons, la re- arded as decidedly a "liberal" cen ter. The brewers nnd the brewery sa loon keepers, therefore, plunged Into the fight with a determination and an audacity that suggest.! the last energy of desperation. They began Immedi ately after the call for the special ses sion was promulgated, and for sever al days, while the good citizens of the city slept at the switch, they were buy making hay. As a result they got the advantage of a long start, but the best citizenship o fthe city at last became aroused and both shies went at it hammer and tongs. It Is questionable what the intent of the liquor foiccs that are operating here really Is. I'ndoubtedly, they are acting under direction of men higher up In the brewery-s iloon combine, a view more generally shared by the politicians of this county Is that they hope to carry Mimele nnd to reduce the normal republican majority in the county as a whole to such a large ex tent as to give encouragement and il.ier to the brewery-democratic alli ance over the state, and thus Inspire their followers all over Indiana to woik hinder for the election of the democratic state and legislative tick ets. It Is known as an absolute ec't.iln ty as this county shows a large falling off In tho republican vote yes! T-lay that fact will be heralded by the I rewery combine as an Indication that the people of Indiana are not favora ble to county local option. Too com bine, it is believed, hopes tj get at least that much capital or campaign "thunder" out of the election here. A man is wanted to sit on the draw of the Oregon Slough span of the new Columbia river bridge and start the motor whenever It Is desired to swing the draw to admit passing boats. It Is estimated that steamers wil want to pass up the Oregon Slough a.s often perhaps as twice a year. There Is no traffic on the Blough now and never has been any to speak of. comfortable chair or couch will be provided, where he can sit or re cline at ease, smoke his pipe and re gard the scenery adjacent to the Ore gon Slough bridge. The delicate question arises as to whether or not a helper should be provided to refill the lazy man's pipe when It goes out, for such a task re quires more or less energy. On that point no decision has yet been reach ed. Of course, the bridge-tender will be rf quired to keep trespassers off the bridge, but an occasional wave of the arm as he sits blinking In the Oregon sunshine will accomplish that pur pose. Otherwise he will have nothing at all to do. Such a Job should prove as attrac tive as a gaily-colored fly to a hun gry trout.
