Hood River, Sept. 13. Assurances have been given the Open River Transportation company that a suf ficient quantity of wheat will be kept the upper river landings to keep Its fleet well supplied with cargoes. On receipt of this piece of cheering Information officers and a crew for the steamer Belief were appointed and they will leave for the upper river on the steamer J. X. Teal to morrow. The company will place the Belief In regular service a few days later. She will ply between the state portage road and points on the upper Columbia. Toward the latter p:irt of October there will be two other steamers operating on the up per Columbia. These boats are being built at Celllo and are being hurried to completion. Each wll have capac ity for handling about 200 tons of grain. During the low water period the government will remove obstruc tions from the channel of the upper river, making it navigable at an ear ly date as far inland as Lewiston Idaho. If the prisoners behave they will be rllowed in the first class where plain clothes will be given them and their hair may grow long. Baker City, Sept. 19. That Is, according to the conception of Abe Jackson, a Russian Jew who has been In this country long enough to learn some things. Abe's experi ence seems largely to have been eon fined to the. affairs of the sheriff's office as he has been more than once connected with suits In the local courts. The result of his experience came out when Jackson appeared be fore the circuit court making appli cation for citizenship and while un dergoing the examination necessary to ascertain his qualifications for cit izenship, the court asked him If he could read, and he said he could not. "Can you write?" "Xo." "Who Is the president of the United States?" "I don't know." "Who Is the governor of the state of Oregon ?" "I don't know." "Well, who runs this government?" was the next Interrogatory from the court. The answer was fitting from his experience with the personality named. "Why, Kd Rand." This was too much for the court. Strenuous methods to stamp out the kidnapping evil which seems prevalent In this city will be taken by the "Kidnap" squad which was organized among the city detectives by Chief of Police Shlppey. The squad will at once commence ac tive work. Within the past month 15 girls of between the ages of 13 and 19 years have been lost, their disappearance being as complete as though the earth had swallowed them. Chief Justice Bean today allowed a writ of error In the case of the state of Oregon vs. Christ Nielsen, which Involves police Jurisdiction over the waters of the Columbia river, so the case can be carried up to the United States su preme court. Nielsen was arrested by the Oregon authorities on the Washington side and found guilty. He was fined for violating the Oregon prohibitory fishing laws. The ques tion Is whether Oregon can assert po lice power on the Washington side. Pay for Indian Fighters. . Portland, Sept. 19. Oregon and Washington Indian war veterans will use their influence again this winter In the effort to secure the passage of a bill In the Washington legislature allowing the survivors of early fron tier battles $2 per day for past servi ces. At present the remaining hand ful of men who risked their lives SO years ago to advance civilization, are receiving $8 per month federal pension. Dog Race and Boys' Race at the Fv'r for Prizes. The Nissen Implement store has arranged for two races to take place during the coming fair, one a boy's footrace and the other a dog race, the dogs hitched to wagons and driven by boys on Saturday, October 3 at 2 p. m. Every boy who will cause to be brought to the Nissen Implement store 125 worth of custom will be permitted to enter the dog race, the winner to receive a $10 boy's wagon with tongue and shafts and a 35 dog harness. Boys' Race Every boy who causes to be brought to the Nissen Imple ment store $15 worth of trade will be allowed to enter a boy's foot race and the winner will be given a 36 coaster wagon, but no boy who en ters one of the races shall enter In the other. Here Is a chance for the boys to get to work and win some prizes with but little labor.
