Englc of the Pasteur Instl tute nt Lille, France, are now In the mountains of this state hunting cop perheads and rattlesnakes for the purposo of extracting poison from their fangs and using It in experi ments to find an antitoxin for malig nant fevers. The reptiles are caught alive by means of a snare of fine silver wire as flexible as a thread. One end Is mail.- into a slip noose, and attached t the end of a stick four or five feet In length, and when a snake Is found tills noose Is slipped over Its head and the slightest pressure of the snake will draw it tight. In this manner it I' often carried until the cage Is reached. The extraction of the venom has of necessity to be done with extreme I care. Over the mouth of a thin glass funnel about three inches in diame ter Is stretched a piece of sterilized, wlde-mesh gauze, fastened In place by a rubber band. The end of the funnel Is inserted in a sterilized, frost ed glass tube, about three-eights of nn Inch In diameter and about three Inches long. The funnel and tube arc held by a pair of long forceps. The cage con taining the snakes has a small open ing in It. When this is opened thev will try to make their 'escape and as they do so they are grouped Just back if the head. Anger the Reptiles. Snake and gauze-covered funnel are gradually brought nearer and nearer until the snake's head has approach- (1 within two or three inches of the mouth of the funnel, when a slight, cUick pressure of the doctor's hand angers the reptile and It strikes the first object In view and sinks Its fangs Into the meshes of the gauze. These fangs, of w hich there are two, located In the upper Jaw, are nature's hypo dermic needles. As soon as any pre sure is exerted upon them the Venom Is ejected through them from glands located above. Two drops of venom are all that are extracted each time, but the same snake Is used time and time again With these two drops of poison cling ing to the gauze the first gleaning of the harvest is obtained. A Rlight tap upon the gauze causes the venom to drop Into the funnel and from there Into the sterilized tube. Great care Is exercised to keep everything con nected with the operation sterile. When the tube is full It Is hermetical ly sealed. The commercial value of the ven om Is $30,010 a pound, or $2000 an ounce. 'Dr. Atkinson expects to ob tain about $3000 worth from his sum mer's work. Venom as Antltovln. While the use of venom secured from reptiles ns an antidote and an titoxin Is not new, Its use an an an titoxin for malignant fevers Is. Dr. Atkinson carries a set of surgical In struments with him whenever he Is out hunting snakes nnd his method of treating a snake bite Is very Inter esting. Should he be bitten on the end of a finger, the most probable place In handling them, a common rubber hand such as Is used In every office, is twisted tightly about the finger near the hand. When the circulation has been shut off the band Is gradually worked forward until the blood Is all forced Into the tip of the finger. Then with a sharp lance an incision Is made in the flesh from the first Joint to the tip of the finger and the blood spurts am anil carries the poison with It. ' After the blood and venom have bi en removed from the lacerated fin ger a hypodermic Injection of potas sium permangnate Is made in the fin ger, and as a last resort strychnine is administered In tablet form. For tunately Magee fell on a stable roof under the window and rolled to the ground with no bones broken, but he was considerably bruised. Dr. Hoyle, the team's physician, was sent for and took him to a hospital. An X ray photograph showed no bones broken so he was taken back to the hotel, where he explained how it hap pened.
