Miss Bertha Alexander left this morning for Hermlston, where she will visit for several days a guest ai the home of her sister, Mrs. E. P. Dodd. F. P. Marks and family of Tecum- seh, Okla., arrived In Pendleton yes terday from the east. Mr. Marks Is seeking a western home and is much pleased with this city. Oliver P. Morton, examiner for the reclamation service at Hermlston, re turned this morning to his home In that city after a brief visit In Pendle ton looking after legal matters. J. F. Robinson, proprietor of the Domestic laundry and the president of the Oregon anil Washington laun- drymcn's association, left his after noon for Vancouver, B. C, to attend the annual gathering of the association. Father Hickey of Wasco, stopped off in Pendleton last evening while on his way to his parish after a visit to Bishop O'Reilly at Baker City, and was a guest of Father Xeate. Father lickey left this morning for his station. Dr. H. E. Plnkerton of the federal bureau of animal Industry, returned last evening from an official visit to Shaniko. He expects to leave 'Satur day for Heppner, where he will In spect a large shipment of sheep to be sent outside the state. Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Mikesell of Echo, are spending a couple of days In Pendleton. Mr. Mikesell Is a prominent Butter creek randier and fruitgrower. Although Butter creek suffered this past year In Its alfalfa i rop from drouth, he declares that the fruit was never better. Charley Gardner, day clerk and night clerk at the Hotel Pendleton for the past 10 years, left this morning for Shaniko, where he will take charge of the Jim Keeney hotel, hav ing leased that establishment for a term of years. Gardner took his fam ily and will take charge of the hotel about September 20, Intending to make his home In Shaniko perman ently. The number of years he has been connected with the local hotel and the trust that was put In him are standing testimonials of his under standing of the hotel business. Was Dan Cupid or some scheming crimi nal the Deus ex machlna in the dis appearance of Miss Ester Hubert who has been missing since Sunday. Friends of the missing girl declare that only foul play of some sort could have kept he girl from communicat ing with them In person or by mes sage, but the police are Inclined to the theory that the story of a roman tic elopment will explain all. They have communicated with Xorth Yaki ma, Wash., In which city they believe Miss Smith will make her appearance as the happy brldo of Phillip Brad ley, of whom nothing has been known since Sunday, ulso. Bradley Is, un old schoolmate and' former sweetheart of the missing giri and it Is believed that he resum- 1 ed his attentions during a recent visit1 In the east. It Is believed that he ar ranged to meet the young lady last Sunday and left immediately for .North Yakima, where he Is a success ful fruit grower. The missing was a student at Smith college. In a drunk en frenzy Sherman Brantner, a drummer, met a horrible death last night, beating out his own brains on the' wall of the cell In the rltv'lali: which he was occupying. j Brantner was arrested last evening after a protracted spree. During the; night he managed to batter his head, against the cell without attracting the j attention of the guards until he was! found dead this morning. Brantner traveled out of Omaha and was the son of a prominent family, his father ' being police Judge at Clinton, Mo. When Police Commissioner Bingham some time ago In a magazine article alleged that 50 per cent of all the criminals In Xew York were Jews, he was unjust to that ancient race. The result was an organized 111 feeling against the commissioner among the Jewish people of the city which has been abated somewhat by Commissioner Bingham's statement this morning that the figures given were Incorrect.
