Washington, Sept. 17. To gratify tho whim of n king's mistress Louis XIV of France built a 12-milo road of sugar to give his favorite a sleigh i Mo in Mimmrr time. To save American farmers thous and, of dollars in hauling costs and make a dust proof road, the depart ment of agriculture is now complet ing experiments and testing what the future will know as tho "candy" road. "Candy" in more ways than one this new road is termed. Officials believe it will be of great benefit to the communities adopting it. And, moreover, the ' principal material of Its manufacture Is molasses. In all flights of fancy It is proba ble that nobody except a scientist would go so far afield In research as to adopt molasses as a road building material, but that Is exactly what has been done here, and Assistant Chem-l--t Prevost Hubbard of Director I'age's scientific corps, Is leveling a half mile stretch of road near New ton, and In a few days will be in ac tive supervision of the laying of tho first molasses road of history. The molasses used Is the almost U'clt ss by-product of the great cane sugar refineries of the south, and the Ik et susar refineries of the west and southwest. It Is sicklshty sweet, in;-r!y ns black and as thick as tar. and almost -us powerful as a binder. Having always been a wate product, It can be bought at a lower price than eoal tar and In greater iiantitles. When the quantity ond the sticky consistency of this material was called to the attention of Director Page, a number of months ago, he conceived the Idea that It might aid In solving the always difficult problem of dusty roads. He sent for a supply for lab oratory experiments and detailed Mr. j Ilu'ii'uard to conduct them. The mo lasses was blended with oils and lime water; was mixed with rook dust, with earth and with sand and tried out under heat and under water. It behaved so Well and held out such Pioniises for Idea! roads that the practical test of a real road was. re cently decided upon. Monday morning ever 70 tables of the 100 pre pared by the Hood Itlver Applegrow ers union were filled with students v. ho came to learn the art of apple packing. More have been Joining the band of workers until now all the available room la about occupied. Most of the class are residents of this vicinity, although there are a few from outside districts and among the pupils are about a dozen young la dies. This school was opened In or der to develop packers to properly take care of the big apple crop which will be shipped from Hood River this year, and the managers of the applegrowers' union hit upon this plan In order to take care of the busi ness. The course In packing will last all the week and possibly a few days longer. Boxes and apples have been furnished by the union and Instrue tins nro given free of charge. Stewart .Must Make Good. Washington, Sept., 16. It was an nounced today that the war depart ment would soon order Col. Stewart, the Ft. Grant exile, to appear before the retiring board. He will appear be fore the medical board and will be given a strict physical examination. If in the slightest unfit Col. Stewart's retirement will be made compulsory. Spokane. Sejt, 16 Whether the study of "pie" shall be added to the high school curriculum Is the ques tion which now faces the Spokane school board. Mrs. J. W. Marshal has appeared before that body and sug gested that the aspects of pie, geo metrical, physical, chemical and phy siological were worthy of a place in the study ride of any civilized system of education Moreover, the lady herself Is willing to Initiate the youthful mind Into the penetralia of tne great American dessert. Irish Industrial Conference. Oalway, Ireland, Sept. 16. Open ing of new markets for Irish goods outside of the Emerald Isle Is the special subject under consideration today at the opening session of the All-Ireland Industrial conference. Irish residents of America, Germany, France, Denmark, Australia and Mexico are In attendance. An exten sive exhibition of Irish manufactures Is being held in connection with the conference. Special commemoration medals of Irish bronze, with enamel and gold, were presented to each dele gate. The confrnoo hopes to re vive the lacemaking anil similar handwork Industries which have al most been driven out of existence by cheaper manufacturing processes. Veterans of the new department of Oklahoma, Grand Army of the Republic, gath ered here today In force for the first reunion since the consolidation of the Oklahoma and Indian territory di visions. Many Itougil Riders and other veterans of the Spanish-American war are here as the guests of the civil war veterans. The reunion will last three days.
