For this reason this hardy wheat of the far north Is converting hun dreds of square miles of Alberta Into rich and productive, fields. It has been trained to grow In the north. This year the famous Alberta red winter wheat Is paying for the seed ing, harvesting and fencing of land ami beside paying for the land. Yields of from 35 to CO bushels are common on the new land recently thrown open by the Canadian Pa cific east of Alberta. It csts but $7.50 per acre to break, seed and fence the new land and 14 50 to cut and thresh it. while the land Is yielding from 35 to 60 bushels of wheat at SO cents. The total cost of seeding and harvesting the land Is but $12 per acre, while the crop Is worth all the way from 126 to $40 j per acre. i Since the first cost of the land Is but 112. 115 and 11$ per acre, ac cording to Its location. It Is seen that thousands of poop settlers owe their homes to the hardihood and staying qualities of tho Alberta red. AH the way through Alberta prov ince as far as the eye can see this year are wheat fields, the shocks thick on the ground and the elevators full. Sod land yielded exceptionally well this year and prices of land have advanced all the way from 15 to 18 per acre In the past year and It Is thmiicht they will advance still more In the next year on account of the enormous crop and the heavy Immi gration Into the country this year. The ring of the Armory Athletic association will be the scene tonight of a 12 round bat tle between two heavyweight near cliamplons, Marvin Hart and Phila delphia Jack O'liricn. Hart declares his confidence that he will win a decisive victory over the Philadelphia!!, and will then go after Hums and challenge the lemon cham pion to do battle. That Is Marvin's chief object In taking on the faking Phlladelphlan. He has already trimmed O'Brien twice. He met him in Philadelphia May 19, l:u2, and again on May 5, 1!03, In six-round bouts. On both occasions he had O'Brien on the verge of a knockout throughout. It took all O'Brien's foxlness and ring skill to Htay on his feet until the last bell. s these were the Philadelphia no decision bouts, Hart's victories do not figure in his record, another, case of the hard luck that has pursued him In his ring career. But the newspa pers all said that Hart whipped O'Brien to a frazzle. This was when O'Brien was at his best. Burns has never whipped O'liricn decisively. He Inveigled O'Brien Into the ring out of condi tion at their last meeting as Burns had agreed to lay down to O'Brien and the Phlladelphlan did not get rea ly for him. Burns, on the other band, got himself Into prime shape to give O'Brien a thorough beating. He failed to do so, for although O'liricn had not trained and was given a severe nervous shock as soon as he entered the ring, all bets being declared off. He went the 20 rounds with Burns and there was little to choose between them at the finish. Hart says all be wants Is to get In the ring with Burns. lie will fight Burn, winner take all, and will agree to give Burns all the money If he doesn't stop him In 20 rounds. When finished the Catskill aque duct will be able to carry not only the 250.000,0(10 gallons of water dally which the Ashokan reservoir will fur nish, but also the additional quantity which it Is proposed later on to draw from other watersheds o ftho Cats- kills. By 1913, It Is calculated, New York will be using 710,000.000 gallons of water every day and to meet the needs of a time when even Ashokan will not be able to supply the city's great thirst plans have already been mad to utilize further the resources of the hills when needed. ' The Ashokan reservoir Itself will cover an area of 8200 acres, or 12.8 square miles, divided by a dkyo Into two basins. It will be 12 miles long, nearly three miles wide at Its widest point, and will have a shore line of 40 miles. Its storage capacity will be nil. ooo, (loo gallons. The maximum depth of water will be 190 feet; the average depth 50 foet. From the little village of West Hur ley, eight miles west of the Hudson river, to Its upper end beyond West Shokan this immense storage basin will bury under Its water an area of country having at the present time a permanent population of 1900 and a summer population of at least 2900. Seven villages will be wiped from the map; 32 cemeteries will be sub merged, and 2400 bodies burled in them will have to be removed to other testing places. Sixty four miles of public highways will be Included within the reservoir or discontinued because of Its building, and 25 miles of new highways will have to be built. The Ulster & Delavyare railroad, which runs through the Esopus val ley, will be submerged for 11 miles, and to carry the road around the gap thus made 14 miles of new track will have to he located and built.
