Interest In the coming national conventions of th conservation commission, of which Olfford Plnchot Is chairman, and the National Rivers and Harbors con gri-sH, of which Hon. Joseph E. Rans dell of Louisiana, Is president, largely on the Increase, as Is shown by the dlscUHslons throughout th country during the past few weeks. The meetings of these two grea bodies, In December next, gives prom 1st of being most largely attended by the representative men of the nation Interested In the conservation of out nutural resources and In waterway Improvements. Although no special effort has been made to bring together the leading experts and enthusiastic workers for the causes represented, letters re celved by the president of the River and Harbors congress and the secre tary of the conservation commission, show that the week of December 7 n Washington wiy be crowded with mportant meetings. The conservn, tlon commission will meet on Tues day the 8th, while the national con ventlon of the Rivers and Harbors congress will be held on the 9th, 10th and 11th of December, at which 6000 delegates are expected. Among the governors who have al ready Indicated their Intention of be ing present at the conservation com mission meeting, and who will re main over to attend the National Rivers and Harbors congress, are: Hoggett. of Alaska; Frear, of Ha wail; Wilson, of Kentucky; Guild, o Massachusetts; Warner, of Michigan; Johnson, of Minnesota; Glenn, of North Carolina; Post, of Porto Rico; Cummins, of Iowa; Brooks, of Wyo ming, and Sheldon, of Nebraska. These state executives have Intl. mated their presence In Washington during the period mentioned, while many others are yet to be heard from. It Is expected that In conjunction with the annual national conventions of the Rivers and Harbors congress and the national conservation com mission, President Roosevelt will ask STORMING IN MOUNTAIN'S. Enrly Snows Drive Cattle From tlie Hllbi. Lewiston, Idaho, Sept. 3. The storms of the last week have started the herds of cattle and sheep from the high ranges of the Bitter Boot forest reserve, where pasture Is fur nished each summer for thousands 6f head of range stock. During the next few weeks the cattle will be ranged on the low hills adjacent to the mountains and the sheep brought to the high plateaus. Winter range Is found on the breaks of, tho Salmon Snako and Clearwater rivers. Farmers of the prairie sections are being offered fancy prices for- their stubbleflelds and stacks by stockmen who have winter range In the districts devastated by grasshoppers, and it Is probable large bands will be main tained in the fields during the entire winter. - PhssciI Examination ' Siieooifully. Lewiston, Idaho, Sept. 3. Many estimates of the peach crop have been made, some of the growers declaring that 800 cars of peaches will be shipped from Clarkston orchards. George Crum, who Is familiar with almost every orchard on Clarkston flat, said recently that the peach pro duction would not be as large as at first estimated but that 400 cars would, be gathered this fall. The small fruits have been profit able this summer because the can neries have been using all that they could handle. Whitman to 0Hn SepiemlMT II. Walla Walla, Aug. 3. Whitman college will open for tho fall semester September 14, and already applica tions for rooms are being received In the city, the dormitory having been practically all engaged. From pres ent Indications tho attendance will be larger in every department than last year. Nine new Instructors will begin work this fall. Several will open new departments which have been estab lished this year, while others will 'S the attendance of the governors o! all the states Into conference largely patterned after the wonderfully suc cessful meeting at the White House last spring, and from which vast ben efits have already accrued. During the next month or six week both tho president of the Rivers and Harbors congress, Representative Ransdell, and the chairman of the conservation commission, Chief For ester Plnchott, will be busily engaged In addressing conventions upon the subjects of interior waterways and the conservation of natural resources. Mr. Plnchot, and, In all probability, Mr. Ransdell, will address the Nation al Editorial association to be held In Boston August 21-27. Mr. Ransdell will speak before the National Irrigation congress to be held at Albuquerque, N. M., Septem ber 29, to October 3. Vice-President Fairbanks and President Ransdell ar scheduled for addresses at the con ventlon of the Upper Mississippi Rlve Improvement association, to be held at Clinton, Iowa, September 22-24. Both Mr. Plnchot and Mr. Ransdell are expected at the Farmers' Nation al congress, to be held at Madison, Wis., September 24-28. Chairman Plnchot and possibly Representative Ransdell will address the Amelcan Bankers' association, which meets at Denver September 28 to October 1. Among the many organizations which have held their annual conven- tlons, conservation of natural resour ces, and Improvement of the water ways of the United States had earnest consideration at the National assocl- tlon of Manufacturers, which met lt New York city In May. the Lumber educational association at Cleveland n June; the Tellow Pine Lumber as sociation at Chicago. In July, and the Chautauqua Institute at Jamestown, N.
