Report reached the city Monday that the steamboat recently purchased by Van Arsdale and associates at Bandpolnt to be placed in service on the upper Snake river would reach here today from Rlparla, says the Lewiston Tribune. It appears that the boat was shipped from Sandpolnt to Rlparla and Mr. Van Arsdale has employed an experienced steamboat man to bring the craft here. Mr. Van Arsdale is the owner of the little steamer Wilhelmlna. which he built here several months ago. The power equipment of the craft was In adequate and he has arranged to In stall larger engines. He plans also to add a third boat and has organised a company to handle the fleet of steamers. There have been repeated rumors that Mr. Van Arsdale is associated irlth one of the large railroad com panies, but he states he Is operating independently. Yakima Cattle to Hawaii. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Carter of Hon olulu arrived at the Takima last night, having left their tropical Island home some three weeks ago on what Mr. Carter calls a vacation trip pri marily, but which he afterward ad mitted had a great deal to do with buying some of the blooded stock be longing to A. J. Splawn, and with that Intent Mr. Carter went out to the Splawn ranch In the Cowiche this morning to confer with the rancher! and possibly make arrangements for a shipment of stock to the islands, says the Takima Republic. Mr. Carter, ho 1 a cousin of Gov ernor Geo. 0. Carter of Hawaii, was an attorney for 15 years in the Is lands, his home being on the Island of Hawaii, which is the largest of the group, but of recent years he ha dropped the practice of law and be come a stockman. Will Bore Four Oil Wells. The Ontario Cooperative Oil and Gas company, the first of the week ordered a standard rig to cost In the neighborhood of $12,000 and as soon as the same arrives active operations for the exploitation for oil and gas in this near vicinity will be com menced, says the Baker City Democrat The company will bore four -wells through the shale, and there Is no question but that natural gas will be found, and It Is more than an even chance that oil will be encountered, for all reports of this field emanat ing from experts, are to the effect that this section, when developed, will be one of the largest oil fields In the United States. First Woman Autoist to Crater Lake. Mrs. John Olwell is doubtless the first woman to drive an automobile up to Crater lake, says the Medford Tribune. In company with Mr. Ol well, Mrs. Olwell met the Harriman party at Trail, then continuing on their way to the lake. Mrs. Olwell drove her own Reo touring car the entire distance with out accident of any kind. Coming Fast Runner Is Deed. Snark, one of the fastest running horses ever brought to Oregon, is dead in this city, at the age of 10 years, says a Roseburg item. A kick from a fractious racing mare In Dick Turpln's barn broke the upper bone of his right hind leg and h'e had to be shot. Snark was brought to his city from Grants Pass Monday with the mare that kicked him and which is owned by Al Teal of that city. Both nags had been together for the past six months, and were to have been raced at the district fair at Marshfleld next week, ' Snark was owned by Jacob Pry of Grants Pass, j Horses Died from Thirst. W. J. L. Anderson met with an un- pleasant surprise when he went out to his ranch a few days ago, says a Medford item. He left four head of horses in a field on the ranch when he left there, four weeks ago, and at that time there was ample water run ning in a creek in the field, but when he returned this week he found the creek dry and three of the four horses dead from thirst. One of these was a blooded brood mare, sis ter of the stallion Tybald, and the other three were her colts. Baker City Leads. In point of number of people go ing on Friday evening's excursion to the coast, Baker City leads. Baker City, 165; Union, 10; Elgin, 52; Imbler, 10; La Grande, 115. ALBEE NEWS NOTES y STOCKMEN PREPARED FOR COMING OF WINTER Berries Are Plrmifnl Back In the High Mountains Cattle Coming from the John Day Country tor Shipment to tlie Sound Markets Exhibit for the District Fair. by Mrs. J. S. McLeod, of the Dixie ranch. James Jones is camped at R. Mc Donald's ranch with 329 head of beef cattle on the trail to Pendleton. The cattle are a choice lot and were brought in the John Day country. Zoe Houser also camped here a few nights ago with 190 head. These cattle are all consigned to the sound markets. Albee, Aug. 24. Weather fine and warm in day time with thunder showers for the past four nights. The harvest is now about gathered and although the crop is lighter than usual the quality is good and the stockmen of this neighborhood are pretty well prepared for the coming winter. The huckleberry crop is short around here but by going back about 20 miles there are lots of berries. There are now about 25 families camped In the vicinity of Pearson Meadows and Oriental Basin, laying In mountain fruit for the winter. The late showers are bringing out the gardens. The spuds that were thought to be a failure now give promise of a fair crop. Ed Brehm whose horses range on Hidaway reserve, has been riding for the pant month, has returned to his home In Weston. He has left Bart Baracla In charge of his stock. How ever, Mr. Brehm will be back and forth to keep in touch with his In terests here. Sam Xeal lost about 15 tons of hay and Ed Howard about 20 tons by fire when Mr. Neal's buildings were burned about 10 days ago. Mrs. Josr-ph McDill and daughter of Pendleton,, are visiting relatives here. H. T. Connell has taken a trip to the coast for the benefit of his health. He w1il remain until the be ginning of the Pendlpton fair and re turn to exhibit some fine horses; also a small herd of tame deer raised on the Connell ranch. Ten dis tinct topics concerning the betterment of the fire fighting systems now in use in American caties, will be considered during the convention opened here to day by the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Canadian cities, as well as those of the United States, are rep. resented ' by their fire department chiefs. The convention will last until Friday. Michael Higglns, chief of he Albany, N. Y., fire department, Is president of the assoclaion. The ses sions will last through tomorrow, Thursday 'and Friday, and will indued many entertainment features.
